I had seen a good explainer describing how if Russia had launched a Barbarossa-style Blitzkrieg it would involve first, second, and third echelons, but the second echelon didn't come. This was the sort of discussion taking place with Ukraine letting them charge in and then destroying their supply lines. Is that likely to change? Could a second and third echelon be waiting in the wings? It seems like it would be hard to conceal that now that we have live satellite imagery.

ETA: this was the thread. It’s chock-full of interesting info for anyone interested.

That is probably not a recent picture. It is winter in Ukraine and that looks like a pic from summertime.

FIFA bans Russia from competing in World Cup

Rather hypocritical given we just competed in the Olympics of a genocidal regime that is responsible for a worldwide plague that killed 5 million plus people.

Also FIFA took bribes to have the World Cup in Qatar over the United States, where while we could host it next month with no logistical problems, Qatar built multiple stadiums that will never be used again and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 slaves that built them.

So sorry, FIFA, as much as I despise what Russia is doing, you have no moral high ground to stand on.

[The Guardian] Turkey will limit Russian access to Black Sea

quote:

Turkey’s president, Tayyip Erdogan, has said Turkey cannot abandon its ties with Russia or Ukraine, adding that Ankara would implement a pact on maritime passage from its straits to prevent an escalation of the war, Reuters reports.

Turkey described Russia’s invasion as a “war” on Sunday, which allowed it to invoke articles under a 1936 international accord that will limit the passage of some Russian vessels from Turkish straits. Turkey shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia and has good ties with both.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Erdogan criticised what he called the “indecisive” stance by the US and western powers to Ukraine’s invasion, saying the approach was a sign of a failing international order.

He said Turkey would not compromise from its commitments to its alliances, including Nato, but that it could also not turn back on “national interests” in its region. He repeated that he found the Russian invasion unacceptable.

I was shocked to see fifa and IOC say anything. I would have been less surprised if they named Russia a host country for an upcoming event.

They also only did this after much of the other countries came out said they weren't playing them.

Initially they were just going to ask Russia to change the name.

[The Guardian]Talks between Ukraine and Russia that took place earlier today were “very difficult”, the Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said.

Negotiations are difficult. However, without any obligatory ultimatums already. Unfortunately, the Russian side is still extremely biased regarding the destructive processes it launched.

For sure. I understand that angle and it is very interesting. Zooming out though question is more about bylaws of being a member of UN. There’s no structure in place to start conquering nations and not have membership challenged?

The likelihood that the next Nazi Germany is a UN member at some point in history (compared to non-UN nations) is high IMO. Has this not been considered?

[BBC News] UK regulator launches 15 probes into RT news channel

quote:

Amid calls for the UK to follow the EU and ban the Kremlin-backed news channel RT, media regulator Ofcom says it has launched 15 investigations into the impartiality of the channel's news programmes.

Ofcom said it had seen a "significant increase" in the number of programmes on RT that warranted investigation.

It said the investigations would be "expedited" given the "severity and urgency" of the situation.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has warned that the BBC risks being banned in Russia if the UK takes action against RT, however.

[BBC News] Fifa and Uefa ban all Russian clubs and national teams

quote:

Football's world governing body Fifa and Europe's governing body Uefa have suspended Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions.

The move comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials are banned from any organised international competitions.

It means the Russian men's team will not play their World Cup play-off matches next month and the women's team have been banned from this summer's European Championship.

They've had a mild winter. I've seen some recent videos where it's snowing and some where the ground is bare. They seem to get more snow in the south, presumably because it's near the sea.

Had Ukraine lost any tanks or vehicles at all? Because all I’ve seen on the tv and internet are blown up Russian stuff. According to the news the only thing that the Russians have destroyed are a couple of orphanages and the largest airplane in the world sitting in a hanger somewhere.

I've seen multiple videos of destroyed Ukrainian tanks. Keep in mind though that Ukraine had far less tanks and armored vehicles to begin with than Russia has. Also they operate almost all the same vehicles as the Russians, so some of the images you see of destroyed "Russian" tanks could actually be Ukrainian.
