Put aside your emotions and beliefs, and look at this conflict from the perspective of politics.

To defeat China, you must confront them across the globe, and weaken all their allies.

Getting Russia into a long and bloody conflict that will prevent them from offering meaningful military aid to China is a wise move.

Especially since the US Navy is in the middle of a large refit.

That's the only reason we haven't already attacked them.

We need another year to complete it, and then we will be ready to deal with China for good.

Anyone traveling to Russia should know by now that they are at risk. He should have stayed home. What was he thinking?

He was doing his job as a reporter. In this case, he was working on a story on Wagner recruitment efforts.

No, Russia started the war not the US. To say otherwise is wrong.

No question Russia had their reasons to launch attacks against Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022, but they made the decision.

Furthermore, we didn’t really get involved in a major way until several weeks after the big 2022 Russian offensive
and after Ukraine successful three Russia away from Kiev. Ukrainian resolve and Russian brutality pushed us further in.

He wrote an article which showed how bad the Russian economy was.

Go on

Someone explain to me the view that a large-scale direct conflict with China is inevitable

This would require a world war. Everything else you said means nothing when you say this.

The economic situation only makes this conflict even more essential.

Whatever deal Russia and China have was one they were going to make anyway.

Now, we must seize the "nine dash line".

Our economic future depends on war with China.

First, let's make sure Russia is too distracted to help.

The war in Ukraine is good politics.

This is all nonsense based on your stated goal. All we have done is make China and Russia into allies.

Make no mistake, we are the reason we are involved in Ukraine. No one else forced us to be there. Russia did not invade Ukraine with the goal of engaging the USA.

If you blame the US for starting this war, you’d also have to blame the US for Pearl Harbor and not Japan.
You’d have to blame Poland for WW2 in Europe because they didn’t cave in to German demands.

In other words you can create reasons, but reality is you can’t ignore who pulled the trigger. Japan did, Germany did and Russia did.

This is false. Russia did not invade Ukraine with the goal of fighting the USA. We are doing the exact same stupid crap that kept us in the Middle East for decades.

Only if you believe Ukraine is in the territory of the United States. In fact, they weren't even part of NATO. We had no reason to get involved at all.

True, but we have been “involved” in Ukraine since they became a sovereign nation when we along with Russia pledged to honor their sovereignty if they gave up their nukes.

Russia knew all that, but miscalculated when the West and Biden responded in a strong way to their Feb. invasion and subsequent failures.

I only mosey into this thread infrequently. I keep expecting these folks to start seeing what is happening, like people in the COVID threads eventually did. In this case, people are actually trying to pretend Russia WANTED a war with the USA and that's why they invaded Ukraine. That's so far devoid of reality that it doesn't even make sense. This has to be the mindset that keeps us in generational conflicts for no discernable reason. I guess I've never confronted it as an adult before.
