So, kissing the icon is enough for you? Well, the Russians have always been the kings of propaganda. Still, you should ask them for a living wage, at least.

While on this topic, there is another concern that the Iranians will be receiving or have received critical assistance in the creation of a nuclear weapon system from the Russians. That may have been the reason the UK Defence Minister flew to DC this week and why we see a B2 land in Poland.
On Twitter, it was said that there was in incident with a British reconnaissance plane in international waters with a Russian fighter, where the fighter 'accidentally' shot a missile. Maybe that was the reason?

Bro, Russian propagandists look upon western propagandists with envy. We’re the best there ever was, best there ever will be. Hell, our side has managed to convince most people that 100% of what any Russian says is a complete lie and 100% of what we say is the God’s honest truth when in reality we both lie through our teeth about 50% of the time.

I can't see any way of actually rebuilding their armed forces in light of their massive demographic crisis.
Even if Putin loses this war in spectacular fashion, he’ll have accomplished one of his goals by sending hundreds of thousands of non-ethnic Russians to the slaughter after conscripting them for the meat grinder.

To me this is crazy just how much the conversation had changed from how much territory will Ukraine lose to how much territory will Russia hold on to
Hell, I remember in late February when my wife said "it's really sad that Z fellow is going to die in a week or so. He seems brave."

Putin might hope for some operational pause caused by Western indecision, but the task of rebuilding Russian armed forces actually seems monumental. I can't see any way of actually rebuilding their armed forces in light of their massive demographic crisis. The actual work of modernizing their forces also seems like a decade-long task.
Additionally, the population of Russia has dropped by 5 million since the 2014 invasion. Most of them are young and professional, a brain drain that will resonate for decades.
I’m surprised that Putin didn’t close the borders to stem the tide. Actually, he’s more bully than bright so maybe I’m not surprised.

Which is insane. Those groups are the ones who have made up the majority of births in the country. They are still relatively small groups too. Putin obviously sees ethnic Russians as his power base, but he has done a much better job of seeding support among minorities as well.
Long-term, it is just hard to see how Russia doesn't have a demographic collapse. The difference between other periods of history and this one is that the total fertility rate in the country still remains below replacement. Without massive immigration, the country has very few prospects.

This happened 3 weeks ago, but we're lucky this didn't end worse.

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - A Russian fighter jet released a missile near an unarmed British spy plane patrolling in international airspace over the Black Sea on Sept. 29, UK defence minister Ben Wallace said, in an apparent accident and not a deliberate escalation of tensions.
Britain has condemned Russia for invading Ukraine and hit Moscow with punitive sanctions while giving military and civil support to Kyiv, and relations between the two countries are at historic lows.
Wallace told parliament he had expressed the government's concerns over the incident to Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, and in reply Russia on Oct. 10 said they had investigated and blamed it on a technical malfunction.
"We don't consider this a deliberate escalation by the Russians, our analysis would concur it was a malfunction," Wallace told parliament.
"However, it is a reminder of quite how dangerous things can be when you choose to use your fighters in the manner that the Russians have done over many periods of time."

It's even worse than that. Russia has had nearly 2 million more deaths than births the last two years. That is an insane number. That's more than 1% of the population, according to my napkin math.

More like he saw Ukraine as an instant 44 million new "Russians" by wiping out Ukrainian independence and identity.

On a related note, Liz Truss has resigned as British PM this morning bringing continued uncertainty for Britain. Their foreign policy likely remains the same, but that’s a mess over there.

Yikes. I had not heard that.

Their economy is also in the absolute shitter. The pound is only worth $1.13 at this point and a month ago it was only worth like $1.05

Putin has referred to Ukrainians as “Russians with an accent.” The Ukrainians beg to differ apparently.
By adding Ukraine and Belarus to Russia, the population would have exceeded 200 million, with Ukraine being the industrial heart of the new RF.
That’s not going to happen, of course but I can understand his brutal logic.

If such a thing could even happen anymore. The issue is that at a certain level of economic development, people just don't want more than 2 children, including in America. Everywhere, TFR is buttressed by immigrants, who end up reaching sub-replacement fertility rates in 2 generations or less. 2019 was the first year that the US had sub-replacement rates in every state. The demographic issue is going to be very difficult to manage for a lot of countries.

Which is why the British electronics intel plane that was flying over the Black Sea yesterday had an escort of 2 Typhoon fighters to make sure there were no more “accidents”.

Putin grew up in Cold War USSR, when the Soviets relatively easily executed military operations and coups to take Hungary and Czechoslovakia into the Russian sphere (and made them puppet states, forcibly admitted them into their security alliance). He called the fall of the USSR the most tragic event of the 20th century (not WWI, WWII, or the Russian Revolutions). He wants back the status quo ante without the Communism and the elite that is his constituency can't tolerate living in a world where Ukraine westernizes, gets rich and gives lie to the "great Russia" narrative.

Speaking of losing how in the hell is Russia army still this inept? I keep thinking they will get their shite together but man has this been a pathetic showing.
Historically it seems like most militaries evolve and improve quickly during wartime. That doesn't seem to be the case in Putin's Russia.
Business Insider: Russia's Military has become more Dysfunctional
quote:
The UK's Ministry of Defense said in a daily intelligence update that Russia is running out of "capable ... junior officers to organize and lead newly mobilized reservists."
quote:
According to British intelligence, four of the five generals "with direct operational command of elements of the invasion" at the start of the war in February have now been dismissed.
The UK intelligence group explained that the "lack of command continuity" will be even more disruptive to Russia compared to a Western military because Russia's commanders personally plan troop movements instead of coordinating across the staff.
