Interesting Twitter thread on comparing Russian and Ukrain attack strategies. I have linked the Threadreader unroll below.

One lesson we have learnt over this time period is you can’t trust Ivan around anything that is flammable or explosive.
Amazed how this political and military situation has played out.
The “experts” in February didn’t predict that we’d be here (in the present military scenario) in October.

So here we are and what have we learned?
Russian military is 3rd world bad and poorly run. They were clearly portrayed as a great threat by our military industrial complex to make us spend stupid money on military we didn’t need to do.
Ukrainian are much more capable then we thought.
US and NATO weapon systems are vastly superior.
Putin is no genius and is has screwed himself by overplaying his hand.
Russian shite breaks and they run out of spare parts at about 6 months.
This is a Russian Vietnam, they have painted themselves into a corner and it’s a matter of time before someone takes Putin out now

A sociologist would probably find the ebb and flow of this thread very interesting.

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 16 October 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
On 10 October 2022, Russia probably fired more than 80 cruise missiles into Ukraine. President Putin claimed the strikes were in retaliation for the attack on the Kerch Bridge.
Ukraine's defence ministry reported that more than half of the projectiles were shot down, but dozens struck Kyiv and other population centres, killing civilians and damaging civil infrastructure.
Russia's defence industry is probably incapable of producing advanced munitions at the rate they are being expended. These attacks represent a further degradation of Russia's long-range missile stocks, which is likely to constrain their ability to strike the volume of targets they desire in future.

Washington Post: Iran plans to send ballistic missiles, drones to Russia
October 16, 2022 12:33 pm
The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed U.S. and allied security officials, that Iran is preparing the first shipment of Fateh-110 and Zolfaghar missiles for Russia.
Fateh-110 and Zolfaghar are Iranian short-range ballistic missiles capable of striking targets at distances of 300 and 700 kilometers, respectively.
Earlier on Oct. 11, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia ordered 2,400 kamikaze Shahed-136 drones from Iran for its war in Ukraine. At least hundreds of them have already been delivered, according to Ukraine's intelligence. Ukraine's military reports downing Iranian-made drones on a daily basis.
The U.S. imposed sanctions on four Iranian companies and one individual for the development and shipment of Iranian drones to Russia. According to Reuters, the European Union ministers will also consider sanctions on Iran for providing Russia with drones.
Iran denied supplying the weapons to Russia.

Topic of conversation(s) this morning was factional intercene violence and what happens after Vlad is gone. The main players are at each other’s throats and it’s getting ugly. WG was an insurance policy for VP but it has destroyed trad Military structures and weakened the FSB and GRU to the point of operational effectiveness has been massively compromised. Look Putin knows both the GRU and FSB in microscopic detail and is believed to have learned how their forerunners helped take down every single leader and in his case eased out Boris Yeltsin and allowed for his ascendancy. Billions of dollars have been siphoned off from Military GRU and FSB over the last 20 years. Lots of money have been given strategically to oligarchs or pocketed by VP but the best/worst money has been diverted to WG. At the moment VP is allowing the things he feels help WG to play out. Bolograd yesterday further weakens the military and GRU but is fricking awful for the optics of mobilization C n C. It’s a gambit amongst many gambits. It’s also indicative according to my Baltic friends of off-roading. There are many many unstable ex military and unstable people that have been swept up in the mobilization. I’m hearing 15-20% of people being sent to frontlines with little or no training are undesirables, these people being dead pose very little difficulties for VP. Another 40% are of the Stans variety and this used to not bother Russia proper but this is rapidly devolving into a huge problem as political leaders in the Stans aren’t able to explain their high mobilization and subsequent casualty rates. The last group is Russians viewed as Russians by Russians. The alarm bells are going off in the Kremlin, these people when they die or are maimed can’t be ignored. This is happening with increasing frequency and in high profile ways. I’m not going to explain how the Russian people absolutely revere their military since the time of the tsars or how after WWII there has been an odd cult surrounding it. What I will say is that people I’ve talked to this morning are saying VP may not be able to control the narrative anymore about how weakened the military has become under his watch. Soviet style show trials are being scheduled, denouncements are starting to happen, people are physically disappearing in the internet age. Last but not least NATO guys are saying there is a strong possibility that 80k RU are dead. Not including WG. That there have been tens of thousands of phone calls and emails asking about the whereabouts of soldiers from families that haven’t heard from their loved ones in weeks or months after regular contact. The chatter in intercepts have been about rates of loss and lack of information about the injured and wounded, as in where are they? Once they are “evacuated” no one hears from them again.

Not a Russian Vietnam because Russia has the Donbas and a land bridge to Crimea. What did the USA win in Vietnam?

Large Russian and Belorussian troop and armor buildup in Belarus in the direction of Kiev. Wat mean? LINK

9000 troops won't be enough for an offensive so I'm guessing it's to park UKR troops away from the front
I'm still curious if the Russian soldiers in Moldova/Transnistria have rotated out at all since this all began.

Russian "Gazprom" threatens to stop gas supplies to the European Union if the member states introduce price restrictions on the energy carrier.
We are guided by the contracts that have been signed. Such a unilateral decision is, of course, a violation of the essential terms of the contract, which causes the cessation of supplies," said the head of Gazprom, Oleksiy Miller.

Put us making you pay in rubles totally doesn't violate the contract

The Serbian Government has just announced the closure of its Embassy in the Ukrainian Capital of Kyiv in order to insure the “Security of its Officials”.
This comes around 48 hours after Serbia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and now also China have ordered their Citizens to leave Ukraine Immediately.

This gives me more pause than the troop build up honestly, but then again why wouldn't a government tell their citizens to get out of a war zone
