An eyewitness who said she saw Mitchell struggle during Thursday's storms told KHOU what she saw:
"And he got out of his truck, he got in the bed of his truck, he got back out, on top of his truck, and then all of the sudden he got back in his truck. And like maybe 10, 15 minutes after he was in his truck, it just flipped and he top-sided into the water," Lashandoe Smith told KHOU. "It just disappeared. Once it flipped, you didn't see tires, his truck, nothing. It just tumbled over."

Open or break the window with your seatbelt on, let all the water rush in as you secure your hand to the seatbelt latch. Once the water has reached an equilibrium and there are no forces acting inwards or outwards that are too great swim up as fast as you can.

why did he get back in?
I would take my chances out of the truck

Roll down the window, let the truck fill with water, then attempt to swim to the surface and find some debris to grab hold of.

It almost seems like he didn't realize what kind of danger he was in.

Apparently he thought the cab was water proof.

This whole situation is why I have one of these in my center console. Probably 1 in a 100k that you'd need it, but when you do you really need it.

Probably wait until the cab is almost full of water. Open the door and swim to safety.
The electric windows probably won't work when the water is that high. Opening the door is also going to be impossible until the pressure inside the car is equal to the pressure outside the car.
You have to let the car sink, unfortunately, most people panic and drown while they struggle to open the door.

Well this is depressing. Sorry that he died, but as other posters said, he could have tried to find a way out rather than pausing to post on social media

Or, not get back in the truck. Like the other poster said, I don't think he realized the trouble he was in.

I've watched a bunch of survival shows on the weather channel, and basically you want to get the hell out of the car as fast as humanly possible. By getting back in he did the worst thing possible.

Very effective use of your last moments on earth.

A lot of people in that situation panic and the lizard part of their brain tells them that being inside the car offers some sort of protection. I'd always want to take my chances in the water but I grew up in the water. I guess people that are not strong swimmers see getting out in the water as their last resort.

Studies show that most electric windows do in fact work after being submerged...there is a chance the door could open but likely not...by any means necessary, leave the vehicle through a window or any other means. If the vehicle is floating, you stay with it until it is not, then all you can do is SWIM. The only thing inside a vehicle under water is death...
