but "we're saving the planet from carbon!"

quote:

With 98 charging bays, the facility in Coalinga, California, is the largest charging station in the world. But to provide that kind of power takes something solar can’t provide — diesel generators.

Investigative journalist Edward Niedermeyer discovered that the station was powered by diesel generators hidden behind a Shell station.

That is funny, but I don’t think Harris Ranch is trying to be politically correct. They are the 2nd biggest cattle ranch in the country.

That i-5 exit is a prime fill up spot for travelers from LA to the Bay.

I wouldn't care if EV charging stations were powered by the tears of kidnapped children, I would still prefer the smooth power and low gas-station avoiding maintenance of EVs over ICE, at least for typical daily driving.

I love that it says the journalist discovered that they were powered by diesel generators

What exactly did he think created the power that could charge the vehicles?

How’d they get an emissions permit for those? The worst fuel to use to generate juice.

At no point has anyone said hydrocarbons are not used to create electricity

A gen 4 nuclear reactor can be small enough to fit on an 18 wheeler.

Just pop one in the ground behind the gas station.

Easy peasy no carbon emissions.

Well they can’t make as much money off nuclear power like they do with everything else

If I was a climate change activist which I am not, the only way I see this as being acceptable is if the emissions from that generator were drastically less than individual ICE cars.

When do you think nuclear energy finally gets lobbied to be the energy that saves the planet from this so called climate crisis? Five years? 10? 20? Never?

Even if the emissions were less, that still ignores the impact of mining the materials to make the batteries. The electricity isn’t just stored and converted to kinetic energy for free.

I do not think anyone outside of a moron has ever claimed that EVs were some kind of 21st century alchemy. The issue is that there are an awful lot of morons in the world. Many people sincerely believe that EVs are actually carbon neutral and other morons believe that promoters of EVs have ever claimed that the E part wouldn't come from the same sources the E part as always come from.

The problem is not EVs transforming diesel fuel into electrical current so folks can drive EVs, the problem is that the EVs being sold are mirror images of existing ICE vehicles that are incredibly fuel efficient already, considering their capabilities. The problem with that is those capabilities are not required for about 90% of the use of either the ICE vehicle or the EV. EVs would be ideal for running errands, grocery shopping, even commuting short distances. Having a half ton pickup truck EV is the most idiotic idea ever to be come from the mind of man. Even a 4 door sedan that can carry 3000 pounds and run 100 MPH is idiotic. There is already technology which can do that and does it amazingly efficiently....its the fact that 99% of the time that vehicle is carrying around 300 pounds and running 35 MPH.

I know of a federal installation where there are 3 bio-mass power plants. They are touted as green, renewable energy and held up as shining beacons of hope for the future. They require a shite load of pine trees being hauled all over the SE United States on diesel powered trucks AND, in the ultimate of ironies if you will, also require ground up tires because wood itself does not have the BTUs required to produce any current. Finding a use for used tires is a good idea...they have to go somewhere. But pretending that using them, and pine trees converted to fuel mainly by burning diesel fuel, is renewable is an outright lie. Being honest about it and the public would not be suspect....but they can't do that, they sell these ideas as green and renewable instead of the best of a bunch of bad ideas to address an even worse idea.

I have audited those plants, by the way. They produce less current than the diesel fuel burnt to haul those trees to them would produce in a modern diesel generator. Add in the collection and processing of the tires and it ain't close. What these things are is actually a pretty good way to get rid of used tires. What they are not is a renewable source of clean electricity.

Fwiw, since no one will actually read the article

Edward Niedermeyer came out with this discovery in 2015. This is just restating what he saw back then and not even going as far as to confirm it nor expand on it.

The station is run off the grid, but there are allegedly diesel generators on site. Tesla doesn't say how much power they provide, and the article doesn't know either.

100% factual that Musk has promised full solar charging since 2017 and has not provided.

Said picture from 2015 that spawned this article

What? Rich people make promises that they can't or won't keep? Well alert the fricking press.

Of course you wouldn’t.

Why would a staunch supporter of the party of child molestation, child grooming and child mutilation give a damn about children (especially kidnapped ones as you proudly posted)?

You cannot DIAF soon enough…

Was merely pointing out the only truth uttered in the article.

Fwiw, never heard of this place until this article. Dropped a pin by the Shell station. Only generator I see is a typical one behind a lot of gas stations for power outages.
