Surprised there has been no thread on this as it has been going on for a few days...
Cliff notes:
-Lots of rain has caused the water level to rise in the basin over 200 feet since December
-Spillway has major damage and limits the release. 55000 cfps, they planned on 150000 cfps
-Power plant and Generation turbines are not longer working, so no water flowing through
-Water rose enough to go over emergency spillway. which is 901 feet
-Major flows are eroding away the side of the mountain holding the entire lake back
Saturday 2/11 (emergency spillway):
Sunday 2/12 (Notice the emergency road is now gone):
Monday 2/13

Yeah, that looks like a problem

It's great out here today. I live really close to Oroville. This place iisn't built for floods especially with the privately owned dams"California"

Hope the Even Stevens make it out okay

We need to put those beavers to work

I love dam failures.

keep us up to date.
what website are you getting these from?
I read that the spillway has a 30 foot X 200 feet chunk out of it.
is that correct?
so they are using the emergency spillway for now.
if big rains follow, then the dam will be topped where the damage is?
or as you seem to suggest, water has found a path alongside, which sounds like it could tear a seam in the mountain side leaving the dam empty, and down river very very dangerous, deep. And I suppose that water would ordinarily be released in the summer to keep the river in use and its fish ok, and some for farmers?

They need a dam live cam.

a couple of terrific doomsday movies with a dam breaking.
Jamestown PA lost 2,300 people. That dam was a private dam at a lodge of the rich.

It failed as a direct result of said rich people tampering with the structural integrity.

so three times the water will be behind the dam. what CFPS the emergency spillway?
NOAA website says its supposed to rain at Oroville starting next wednesday for several days.
this could be spectacular.
I love the part in thriller movies where one scientist wants to alert the town and plan to evacuate, but "cooler heads prevail" and they do nothing until the volcano explodes.

Sounds like a dam problem

I saw a story about this on the news last night. After all the dramatic video coverage they said that no homes were in danger from possible flooding. Doesn't seem plausible to me but maybe that's why there hasn't been more coverage.

First California didn't get enough rain, now too much.
Can' t win for losing.
