These places pay really well. I’ve known and known of so many company men that retired at 50-55 because they did so well with pay, OT, bonus, stock options, pensions, and 401k matches.
Yeah, I know one of those guys.
Healthiest 63 year old that I know.

Why would anyone want to work in a chemical plant?
Maybe not exactly the same, but my grandfather worked at Cities Service for 20 or 30 years, and lived into his late 90s.
Obviously not the case with everyone, but it's an example. Hell, with OSHA regulations being what they are, there's bound to be many more jobs more dangerous than working in a plant.

Officials said it involved Ethylene Dichloride.
There was already a critical shortage of this chemical globally which is concerning.
Ethylene prices have increased more than 50% over the last year along due to demand and a shortage of product. This will only exacerbate that increase.

Oh yeah. Hell yeah. Pretty much anything in residential construction. Offshore work. Any kind of first responder. Public school teacher in an urban district. Anybody that has to drive through or in New Orleans for work.
And as long as you are being safe, documenting properly, and doing the job the correct way, you're in the right. Super tells you to do something that's not right, you can stop the job. That can get you fired immediately in a lot of places. In a plant, you get to defend yourself.

The tank was empty when the explosion occurred.

Still limits storage capacity.

That place is a shithole. So is the one in geismar.

Which backs up chlorine/caustic production. That plant, and Westlake as a whole, have a lot of options though. One tank doesn’t stop you, but having to stop production while assessing surrounding damage will hurt. They can move the Cl2 in a lot of different ways.

All I know is if Citgo in Sulphur ever blows up Lake Charles will be vaporized
Posted on 1/26/22 at 12:31 pm to Master Guilbeau

I disagree with this one being in bad shape. I've never been to the one in Geismar, but Westlake has done quite a bit to get it better since they took over.

Thoughts and prayers going out to the Plant Baws.

Portions of it have blown up through the years. Mainly way back when it was Cities Service.

Fear mongering bs.

I'm assuming they have a rail spur in there as well.

Large explosion in Westlake
Provided injuries are minor, how common is an explosion like this for ya'll in TX/LA?
Ie, in 5 or 10 years will anyone go "remember that one in Jan 2022" or is it more regular than that?
Great Question. It will be forgotten by Summer.
