Landrieu is such a douche.
Yup.
Half the people "offended" by General Lee couldn't tell you who he was before the fake outrage took place.

People act like the us flag wasn't flying on the ships that went to Africa or the buildings that sold the slaves or the plantations they worked on or above Jefferson's bed he shared with slaves or the background when Lincoln said he could never support racial equality or the document that freed slaves in the south but kept them in the north or on every battlefield where Americans slaughtered Indians or above the regiments that marched Indians hundreds of miles to reservations or over the Japanese internment camps in ww2 or in the planes that dropped the atom bombs or on the flamethrowers that torched women and children in Nam and Korea and the list goes on and on
The past happened. You can't erase it. And the civil war is a major part of this country's history.
Symbols and flags and statues are a part of history and a part of our country and a part of heritage. You shouldn't get to cherry pick which ones you do and don't like.
The inansely hypocritical nature of the leaders of these recent "movements" coupled with the alarming rampant ignorance and unbelievable unfounded aimless passion the sheep that follow them are displaying is frightening me to my core.
Government sanctioned grave desicration, private monument vandalism, street violence, riots, vitriol, unwarranted hatred, etc... based on a confused psuedopolitical message of incorrect equality without a foundation or purpose that has snowballed off a cliff.
I don't know where this is headed, but it isn't good. It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you fall on or what party you affiliate with or what race or gender you are, these flash social media causes that snowball immediately should concern you. And the complete lack of pushback from any media or polticans should scare you more.

I am a lurker who never posts anything, but this is crazy. I guess the next to come down is Andrew Jackson(jackson square) because he owned slaves at one time. I'm just confused over this whole crazy revolution. Sorry for being a lurker.

The letter invokes a 1956 ordinance that gives the City Council authority to declare public monuments nuisances and have them removed. The law sets up a three-point test to determine if a statue may be removed.
Briefly stated, the council must find that the monument:
* Praises a subject at odds with the message of equal rights under the law.
* Has been or may become the site of violent demonstrations.
* Constitutes an expense to maintain that outweighs its historic importance and/or the reason for its display on public property.
The language of the first provision in particular seems tailored to the removal of Confederate statuary, as it makes a clear reference to the 14th Amendment, which was added to the U.S. Constitution after the Civil War and made black Americans full citizens with equal protection under the law.

Damn. I think that is one of the best counterpoints I've seen to all this pandering nonsense. Well said man

Tabula Rasa. When has that ever gone awry?

It's the idea by a bunch of contemporary liberals that they are bigger than history.
Seriously.
Mitch Landrieu thinks his opinion as current mayor of New Orleans is bigger than Lee.
It's book burning. It's destroying ideas so that people won't see them anymore.

So we're threatened by the confederacy and thus history must erased?
Maybe Rome should level the colosseum since it represented oppression and paganism too!
Pathetic.

"So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained." - Robert E. Lee
Ignorant, incompetent tools who can't do anything to improve the real problems faced by the cities they pretend to represent do things like Landrieu is doing so they can make it appear as though they are actually accomplishing something.

What's hilarious is that they would probably mock ISIS for doing the exact same thing.

Following a hearing, the council may by ordinance declare the monument, statue, or other thing covered by the provisions of this section a nuisance and may provide for the removal of the thing from outdoor public display. The thing removed may then be displayed indoors at an appropriate facility, such as a museum or stored, donated (if it has no monetary value) or otherwise disposed of in accordance with provisions of law.
This is the language of the 1956 ordinance and I suspect why Mitch was talking about museums.

Is his whole end game in all these just to appear as caring towards the black community?
Posted on 7/8/15 at 11:15 pm to Ed Osteen
No. White liberals with inherited money. Street cred

It's interesting how this wasn't an issue until it became cool for it to be. How brave of Mr. Landrieu.

Hell, why not ban Lee in textbooks? Do we want our kids exposed to ideas like that?
