Mayor Mitch Landrieu has formally asked the city council to begin the legal process required to have four public monuments, including the statue of Robert E. Lee in Lee Circle, declared public "nuisances" and taken down.

In a letter addressed to City Council President Jason Williams, Landrieu asks the council to hold a hearing to determine whether the following monuments should be removed: Lee's statue, the statue of Jefferson Davis on Jefferson Davis Parkway, the PGT Beauregard equestrian statue at the entrance to City Park and the Battle of Liberty Place monument on Iberville Street near the riverfront.

Landrieu is scheduled to address the council on the subject at noon Thursday (July 9) during its business meeting.

All four monuments named by Landrieu are dedicated to people or events associated with the Confederacy. Lee and Beauregard were both southern Civil War generals. Davis was the president of the breakaway nation, and the Battle of Liberty Place commemorates a failed 1874 coup against the state's racially integrated Reconstruction government at the hands of a paramilitary band of ex-Confederates called the White League.

I don't even live in NOLA anymore and this pisses me off.

I harbor extreme dislike and resentment for Mitch and Mary.

I refuse to speak bad about the other siblings.

can't stand when politician's start practically falling over each other to hop on a bandwagon like this.

I'm fairly certain that statue has been their your entire time as mayor Mitch, why the sudden urgency? fricking grand standing pieces of shite. I'd be willing to hear someone who is genuinely offended by the statue, but not this disingenuous crap.

All this is doing is creating more hate and divide.

My solution. Honor all of those men for their achevements while US soldiers. Each of them served the United states honorably before starting the Confederacy.

I think Lee was a good man and I feel the same for Jefferson Davis as well.
This is just silly.

That's what's so infuriating. If the city council wasn't completely incompetent I would just laugh at Landrieu. Instead there are enough clowns in the clown car to make it work.

It's truly tragic my kids in all likelihood will never see Lee Circle or the PT Beauregard statue at City Park in their lifetime.

I would say a nuisance is taking it too far. Those are not symbolic of hate like the rebel flag is to many and used as hate by many. But they are symbols of treason to the America.

F Landrieu. If he knew any history about Lee he'd leave that statue alone.

So is the declaration of independence. Let's tear that up while we are at it.

Yeah. Treason. Lets not forget genocide. Yikes, why aren't people protesting the US flag now that I think about it?

What an attention whore. The family is politically dead so they swing for the fence with these bandwagon topics in order to gain notoriety.
