Given that you misspelled Goosport, I must ask you how familiar you are with that area of the city.

Interesting timing, but my wife and I had dinner last night with a couple, the wife being an old friend who grew up in LC who was visiting our area. Her elderly, single, mom lives on one of the streets across from S.J. Welsh. This was a great location when I left in the early eighties. They were concerned as her mom's shed had been broken into a few times, and they stole her lawnmower, etc. each time, and the house was broken into once. I was disappointed to know that this area was in decline. I had a lot of friends who's parents had to flee Oak Park, but a few got stuck there. Tough to buy and sell a home, and afford an upgrade when you are elderly.

this area isnt bad at all. but like sfp said...there are apartment complexes there and im sure you get some riffraff.

but there has always been some apartment complexes in that area and the ones now are much nicer than was there before.

always been little crime things like you mentioned

funny how developers keep building these huge apartment complexes closer and closer to the nice areas and the petty crime is creeping up.

What will destroy that area is if they ever build a high school in what is now South Lake Charles.

Wouldn't that just cause another of the inner city schools to close?
There are only so many people in LC and they don't eve have the nice charter schools yet like Lafayette and Vermillion do

Schools like Barbe and SJ have a myriad of portable buildings to handle the current overflow. The new school would cover that overflow (and likely take some students from private schools whose parents think Barbe is not white enough)

No need. LC is one of the few areas in LA who has public school options that are suitable for good students. Barbe, Sam Houston, Sulphur, etc. I think even Iowa has gotten better.

LC charter schools are primarily for black students. There are only 2 black traditional/public high schools now, Washington Marion and LG. LCB closed a few years ago after it was about to be taken over by the state. That building is a special school now. The charter schools (I know 2 but there may be 3) have handled that population.

sucks

good thing is...the projects on Lake st got torn down. The place being developed will be much nicer

problem is...its mixed use...so in 20-30 years will be right back where it was.

Area around OLQH is slowly going down. More and more rentals back there now. Only a matter of time.

Recently I visited the Goosport Cemetery where several of my cousins are interred and visited a friend's home on See St. I also drove around he general vicinity and noticed the amount of residences in disrepair seemingly from Hurricane Laura.

I learned to swim at the Goosport Recreation Center as a young and played a lot of Slow Pitch softball games sponsored by the LCRD there. The swimming pool was located beyond right field later replaced by a basketball court. I was told that Mayor Nic is having a new swimming pool with a wading pool installed.

My wife's family lived on Lawrence Street which was in an area that was most multicultural area in the city.

Makes sense.

How many more years do you expect for SJ to turn over?

it wont so long as there isnt a new junior high built which no plans too.

i think barbe will build 9th grade campus if anything.

people brought up charter schools...no real need for them in LC...as sfp mentioned...sulphur, moss bluff, westlake all have good schools and there are good schools in LC too. Barbe still has one of, if not the best AP programs and offers a ton of advanced classes

EDS was just built in graywood but it doesnt offer much and is very very small.

St Louis getting the new school though will eventually start getting more and more people. It will be nice, will be done on 27 or 28.

but what a lot of people do is just send kids to private at ICCS or OLQH for middle school if they dont want to send them to SJ.

Yes, east side is what I was referring to. As you said, it wasn’t the greatest but I’ve noticed more and more rentals back there the past few years (in-laws live in that neighborhood).

That east side of lake street makes me think that at some point (when interest rates arent stupid) it’ll be time to relocate. The west side is nice as you say, but inevitably that east side creep will occur.

That big one going up on Country Club next to Nelson looks like it will be a nightmare for the people living in the subdivision behind it.

So does Lafayette and vermillion parish and the charter schools are still popular and growing

Acadiana, Lafayette high, and southside are all good public schools as are North Vermillion and Erath

Milton elementary is one of the best public elementary schools in the state and they just built a brand new charter school not very far from it
