Please help settle a debate between my girlfriend and I.

I am from Louisiana and she is from another state. She has never heard of the word lagniappe..

I told her that we commonly use it in Louisiana to mean "extra"

She has since looked it up and researched and said it is only used to describe a gift with a purchase.. she doesn't believe any other Louisians use it to just mean extra. That I am the only person to use lagniappe in this matter. Example. For example.. LSU just needs 1 run to win this game, anything else would be lagniappe.

Sounds a little too big for her britches.

It means a little something extra above and beyond what one initially expects to receive.

Sounds like y'all are both correct. Congrats

Sounds like you may be both right.

But it's very common to use lagniappe in the way you described.

I'm married to a wonderful Louisiana man and, while I had never heard the word before marrying him, I have since learned that it has very broad use in the sense of 'a little something extra.' And I mean very broad use, definitely NOT limited to 'gift with purchase.' My lagniappe for marrying dh is being able to eat some excellent authentic Cajun food. For example!

She may be a person where you have to physically demonstrate the meaning....explain it to her with a sex act.

"Everything else is just lagniappe" is definitely a pretty common saying

It get's used to describe pretty much anything extra today, but originally it was used to describe something extra on top of a purchase. Meanings of words change over time though. I guarantee if you look up the word hoe in webster there is not the alternate definition: "a girl/woman with an extremely high proclivity for sexual activity, often with multiple partners."

As opposed to Baker's Dozen which is a specific commerce reference that never expanded into Langniappe territory.

You are both right. It dutn't matter. It's entertaining to explain our jargon to people who are not from Louisiana.

Ask her to look up the value of a shite ton.
