My opinion as a native and former resident, here are two neighborhoods I would recommend:

Broadmoor/Woodvale: the heart of everything and is in the best public school district. Homes are older but the schools and location make it great.
Austin Village: great neighborhood near all of the shopping and close to STM and St. Pius if your kids are going to Catholic schools.

(Anything off of Verot or Broussard is hot right now and you might get less house for your money. Might want to look into Youngsville if you want a bigger house)

The neighborhood between South City/Duhon road and East Broussard. On the left of Johnston if heading south towards Maurice.

The houses in the front of the neighborhood are relatively nice, older homes. The back of the neighborhood there are really nice, newer houses.

It's a nice place because its not in the middle of Johnston traffic. Kind of "ducked off", though the area is building quick.

Schools are:
Elementary: Broadmoore
Middle: Edgar Martin
High School: Lafayette High

There's two neighborhoods like that. Stonehaven and Del Mar. I almost built in Stonehaven before I moved to Austin. Get a lot of house for your money and it's in a good school district and close to everything. Only dropoff is that the flood insurance is extremely high.

It's a nice neighborhood, but then I'd likely have to drive into Lafayette for work.

About 3 miles.

Yeah but that three miles is a pain. And you have to do it multiple times a day. At least an hour wasted a day if so. The place is beautiful and the city will grow that way making it much more convenient in 5 years from now I bet.

It is a pain. It will get worse when they start the Verot School Rd widening. I feel bad for those folks who live north of Verot School... especially those who try to enter in the mornings around Jak's. Unreal.

I lived for many years just off Myrtle Blvd. Great older homes, reminded me of the Baton Rouge Garden District. But, got tired of the upkeep of an older home, large lot, petty crime.
I drank the Kool Aid and moved to River Ranch. I like it, but sometimes miss being close to downtown.

Myrtle Blvd.

Awesome street.

I'm off Versailles by Cathedral and hope to never move to the other side of town.

Nothing wrong with it, just too crowded for me.

ETA: I feel your pain with keeping up an older house though.

I got a bargain on an old cottage in the Saint Streets after a year of graduating college. It was great walking to downtown.

Myrtle is beautiful but I don't know if I'd want to live near the end of it.

I was at the Myrtle Square end, on Oleander. But you are right about the Eraste Landry end, need to seal off all access.

So will mine. Have you registered your kid yet at SCS? I called them a month ago, and they said for me to wait until December. I live over in Shenendoah. The shitty water hood.

Have not registered yet. December is when they start taking applications for the next year. My dad is the principal there so he personally delivers the application to myself and my sister for her kids. Are you a parishioner at Sacred Heart in Broussard? That definitly helps with getting in.

I live in Greenbriar Condos, Grew up on Woodvale, Would highly recommend anything around this area. A lot of older homes but could update if your in to that, and you are in the center of everything.

I am a registered parishioner, also a member of the KC council there, and the associate pastor and I are family friends. I have a few connects that hopefully will get him in.

You should have no problems getting your kid in with these qualifications. Just get your app in ASAP because they do date/time stamp the apps in case there is no other deciding factor, then its first come first serve. Prek isn't as hard to get into as someone trying to get into K.

Where is this? Was at city club a few weeks ago and one came and hovered above the pool.
