the classic la fonda regular response. For some reason the people that go there like this. Like they're so cool and have to know the exclusive off menu items. The fried chicked ain't that good. The Don Briggs isn't that good either. Considering it's just a ribeye covered in cheese, that should be incredible, it's average. Waiter style just means burnt. The ziggy wings are probably my favorite "off the menu item"

The only thing keeping the place busy is the clientele's need to feel important. It lets them feel special and exclusive.

Ribeye smothered with Nacho Cheese and grilled onions

Don Briggs Special is always a hit.

Or the Toce Special - ribeye with a fried egg on top.

This was my 80s agenda:

"Normal" girls at Sugars (I think that was the name-- became Mako's later).

"Weird" girls at Nite Caps

Foosball, cannabis, rock and roll at Shanahans

.50 PBR at Loose Caboose. Also, that was pickup / dropoff spot for the "Kamikaze bus" to Espree on Johnson. Think free rotgut kamikaze shot when you get on/off

Espree for meat market. (the Espree name lasted like a year-- that place had about a dozen different handles) Saw Otis Day and the Nights there for half-price because I wore a toga. Was thrown out later.

Pool at the Keg

$1 Big Pete and order of homemade chips on Wednesdays at Pete's

When I aged out of the strip, Poet's

Steve

For real.....that guy is everywhere.

I was getting a script filled at CVS and watched him walk all around the place, not looking at any product in particular, more like he was looking for someone, then he sat down in the little chair that takes your blood pressure, and walked out empty-handed.
I am told he makes rounds at, not one, but two or three of the popular breakfast spots every morning.

I’ve been seeing him more and more lately. I’m guessing he doesn’t work or is retired with a lot of time to kill.

What is his story?

I think it changed names to "B's Grocery" later. They had some good old plate lunches there.

It was originally B's Grocery back in the 50's and 60's and 70's. Darrel's Barbershop was that door towards the back. There was a room between the barbershop and the store where the men would play cards. If Darrel was winning, you'd have to wait forever to get your haircut.

The only thing open on Jefferson back then was that costume shop with all the creepy masks outside.

Before it moved to that location with the mask facade, Downtown was the Costume Shop, The City News Stand, The City Barbershop, Dwyers, and a bunch of ethnic clothing stores and banks.

The City News Stand was next to the barber shop and was awesome. Tons of magazines, paperbacks, newspapers, and comics, but the only thing people seemed to buy was racing forms. Filled with cigar smoke and a fat old cat that you'd have to step over to walk in. If you were a regular who bought comics and Mad Magazines there, the old guy didn't mind if you looked through the Playboys and National Lampoons as well. But if you were a random kid off the street he'd chase you out quick.

First time I've ever heard this mentioned outside my group of friends. The house on that property (now demolished) was pretty interesting.

The blind guy's house. Yeah, I never met him. I used to think that place was a secret whorehouse or something.

What’s the name of that Mexican restaurant that let you pour a complimentary cone of soft serve upon leaving? Is that place still around

Great thread. Great memories.

Bars and restaurants have been covered.

One add... as a kid riding in the back seat with my parents heading to La Fonda or Alesi's Pizza, I used to love driving past the Twin Drive Inn on Doucet. Every now and then, if the timing was right, you could catch a glimpse of a topless woman in one of the R-rated movies they showed at the Twin. Insta boner.
