So I'm a single guy that lives alone. Been thinking about getting a dog but not something I wanted to do without doing some research first. Never had a dog as a child and not very knowledgeable on the subject. My cousin has a lab and everything I've read has me thinking that's the route I'm wanting to go. Any advice on good dog breeds and a good breeder or place to find one?

Find a lab rescue in your area. Labs will chew up ANYTHING they can get for two years

Labs require a lot of attention and room to run. I have a catahoula lab mix, and she's probably the best dog that I have ever owned. Grew up with a German Shepard and a Doberman mix. She's smart, very friendly and gets along great with kids and other dogs.

Do you live in an apartment or house? Will you have the time to raise the dog. Puppies are very demanding especially labs. Check out petfinder.com if you're looking to adopt, or your local shelter.

Eta: saw you have a yard.

Please consider rescue. So many labs are in need of a good home, and they are amazing dogs. I have two myself.

Please don't get a lab, unless it's kind of old and from the pound.

A young lab is like a bowling ball with feet. You think about that.

Some labs chew, some dig but not all. I've had six and none did either.

And I don't recommend a rescue if you are looking to train or hunt. For just a home pet maybe.

Space and amount of exercise that you can give the animal should probably be the two biggest factors that OP considers. As a single, apartment dweller a smaller dog that requires less space might be the best call.

Hunting I can't argue, because I don't hunt. But training a rescue lab is no different, and as a home pet they are the best.

Labs are one of the most "returned" Christmas presents for kids. Let your local shelter or rescue know what you are looking for, more than likely they will have some in the coming months. Bonus points for a black lab, one of the most overlooked shelter dogs.

Don't discount pound labs as being trainable. Got one that was 4 years old and wild as hell, but hadn't ever been properly trained or had much positive attention paid to him. Had that yellow bastard on the straight and narrow within a few months. They're smart as hell and catch on quick.

And it's chocolate not brown.

I have had one chocolate and five black. And I haven't had one in awhile and am looking for one this spring. I will probably look for a black British lab.

I would prefer a yellow or black. In an apt now but hope to have a house within the next 2-3 years.
