I guarantee the diamond ring I gave my wife was worth more than my grandmothers fiancée paid for it sixty years earlier .. and it has already been passed down another generation.

Will synthetic diamonds be considered heirloom… or just end up in the pile of stuff with grandmas cool costume jewelry.. .. just an individual choice.. for individuals reasons.

Surely a jewelry store can sell lab grown diamonds as diamonds without informing the purchaser, right?

I did it. Was upfront with wife too.

Diamonds are a scam. Her rock looks awesome and it’s a fraction of the cost.

The FTC doesn't say they aren't diamonds though.

This is the FTC's definition of a diamond

quote:

A diamond is a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system. It is found in many colors. Its hardness is 10; its specific gravity is approximately 3.52; and it has a refractive index of 2.42.

See anything in there referencing mining or labs?

A natural diamond and a lab made diamond diamond are both a diamond. Just like a Casio and a Rolex are both watches, that doesn’t mean you sell them for the same price.

I’m amazed at some of the concepts posters here struggle with

Sure they do.

They say the public has to be warned if its a lab grown diamond

Why would the public have to be warned about buying a diamond if its a diamond?

You can’t sell a fake Rolex as a real Rolex either, but are you going to argue a fake Rolex isn’t a watch?

You somehow made yourself look dumber with this post. Impressive feat

more than a status symbol (which it definitely is), there's something magical about being able to wear something on your wrist with the craftsmanship and attention to detail and mechanical engineering that goes into a high end swiss movement.

its a sign of a more civilized world and the way things ought to be.

a dirty rock thats been in a shithole in the ground for thousands of years? not so much,

They literally do not. They do not make a distinction between mined and lab-grown when determining if something can be described as a "diamond".

Yes I do.. they say mineral …

Again here is the definition of a mineral.. been the same in every geology class book I took/read…

Mineral is defined as an inorganic, naturally occurring, homogenous solid, with a definite chemical composition, and ordered (crystalline) atomic structures

It states naturally occurring.. argue value of natural versus synthetic all you want but lab grown is not naturally occurring thus not within the definition you reference.

They tell stores they cannot sell lab grown diamonds without disclosing that they are lab grown diamonds

They do not have any such warning for... diamonds

My 2 Cents….

My nephew is about to give his girlfriend a f’ing rock….he said the young people all do it because it’s cheaper and there is no moral implication.

I’m giving my wife 4cts. of real diamond earrings that cost a small fortune (to me) but I’m old and feel like they need to come out of the ground.
