Last year I got rear ended on the interstate by a young black girl who didn’t have insurance, totaled her car, and threw me into the median , luckily I didn’t flip or anything

Trooper asked for insurance, gave my card, and the girl started crying once he said he would have to take her in for no insurance and the trooper put her in handcuffs and put her in the back of his car.

I was privileged enough to have to eat that $500 deductible even though it was her fault and she had no insurance for me to go after

Sigh…

Michigan has the highest rates, so I'm not surprised they're on the list. Surprised that Louisiana isn't 2nd or 3rd though. No pay no play doing work.

If you ever see a car that’s backed into a parking spot you can 100% bet your arse they’re either uninsured or have expired registration. It’s known in Georgia as blacking in.

But LA insurance rates on average are much higher than in MS.

When I moved back here as a student in 1989, liability coverage on my POS was about $30/mo. It went to $100/mo in LA.

My understanding is that, that is exactly what a lot of them do. If you're broke and don't have anything to lose if sued, then it actually makes sense, monetarily speaking, to not have insurance. Especially if you drive well.

Who has time for that

No

They just drive on a suspended license also

Mississippi having highest rate of uninsured motorists is not surprising.

Not trying to sound racist, but every accident I've been involved in had a black driver without insurance, every single one said they felt fine as soon as we all got out of our vehicles, and every single one left in an ambulance complaining about neck/back pain.

At least Louisiana has a No Pay No Play statute. Not sure about MS.

quote:

Louisiana’s No Pay, No Play statute, passed in 2011, states that victims of another driver’s negligence are prevented from collecting the first $15,000 of bodily injury damages and the first $25,000 of property damages if they’re uninsured at the time of the accident.

So only $35,000 instead of the full $50,000......

Always get UM coverage at sufficient limits to cover yourself. You don’t want to get seriously injured or killed by someone at fault with zero or bare minimum coverage (which most people have).

In a state where the flagship university's beloved football team has "official personal injury lawyers," expect high insurance premiums.

It hasn't been that long ago that you weren't required to carry auto insurance in Mississippi. I think it has been less than 20 years.

New Hampshire still doesn't require it unless you have certain driving offenses (dui, hit and run, etc).

Wish auto insurance policies were written in a way that the amount of coverage you carry is the maximum amount you can recover in the event of an accident. I've had 4 accidents in my life, the 3 where I had no fault either had minimum coverage or were specifically excluded. so the max I was able to get before hitting my policy was $10/15k; where as, if I had been at fault they could have gone for $250k+ (don't recall what my coverages are)

1000% this.

I pay for added coverage incase I need it but if some cholo with minimum coverage hits me I’m capped at 15k where they can hit me up for 60-100k.

Only exception I’ll allow is if you’re in a work vehicle but they generally have higher coverage anyway.
