Though some form of car insurance is required in nearly every state, a significant percentage of drivers still don't have insurance — approximately 13% nationally according to recent data.

Depending on the state, this rate can be as high as 29.4% in Mississippi — or as low as 3.1% in New Jersey. Nearly 230 million drivers carry car insurance in the U.S., meaning there are approximately 29 million uninsured drivers on the road.

$500 insurance for a year? seems pretty cheap and

license suspension for one year or until proof of insurance is provided

so take out insurance, get the card emailed to you, print it out, show up for court, get license back, cancel insurance the next day. Leave printed card in glovebox and hope cops are lazy and don't verify it.

Could easily be fixed if they required proof when you purchase your car tag. Hell in the county I live if you are not current on your garbage bill you can't purchase your tag.

Also, interesting:

Most states require proof of insurance or financial responsibility in order to register your vehicle and get your tags, but seven states do not require it for registration. Those states are Arizona, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin

Haven’t made a single car insurance claim in the 16 years I’ve been driving

And they also happen to be the worst drivers so that % is felt even more so.
I wish a law would be passed that required prison time for people who refuse to carry car insurance.

I think the more accurate number in Mississippi is somewhere around 40%.

Wish auto insurance policies were written in a way that the amount of coverage you carry is the maximum amount you can recover in the event of an accident. I've had 4 accidents in my life, the 3 where I had no fault either had minimum coverage or were specifically excluded. so the max I was able to get before hitting my policy was $10/15k; where as, if I had been at fault they could have gone for $250k+ (don't recall what my coverages are)

Annual event in LA, but $500 replacement cost out of pocket is cheaper than the deductible PLUS the jacking up of rates for comp claims

Those minimums are very outdated too given what the average vehicle costs these days.

Run into a hydrant or something soon so that you can get even a semblance of a ROI.

Mississippi is the only state which does not expressly prohibit the possession of an open container while driving

It's that metal plate thing they check on the back of your car when you're getting a "brake tag" on the other side of the "neutral ground"

It hasn't been that long ago that you weren't required to carry auto insurance in Mississippi. I think it has been less than 20 years.

My understanding is that, that is exactly what a lot of them do. If you're broke and don't have anything to lose if sued, then it actually makes sense, monetarily speaking, to not have insurance. Especially if you drive well.

I support civil asset forfeiture of the vehicle for people driving with no insurance

Unless it just lapsed in last few days or something/forgot to pay new premium

A small part of me wishes I was poor enough to afford this.
