LA State Trooper resigns after getting busted for shoplifting in Hammond

(WAFB) - The Hammond Police Department confirmed to the WAFB I-TEAM Friday that Brandon Ostarly, a Louisiana State Trooper (LSP), was issued a misdemeanor summons tied to a shoplifting investigation at Target on March 20th. Ostarly tendered his resignation earlier this week, according to a state official.
The charge listed on the summons is theft by shoplifting, according to the Hammond Police Department.
Anything stolen under $1,000 is considered a misdemeanor in Louisiana, according to Louisiana RS:14:67. If convicted of that charge, Ostarly could face six months in prison or may be fined not more than one thousand dollars, according to that law.
Sources told the I-TEAM that someone at Target contacted police after reportedly catching Ostarly shoplifting at the Hammond Square Mall.
