Louisiana raised our personal income taxes for tax year 2022 when we approved a constitutional amendment eliminating federal tax liability from the state income tax calculation.

LA got 5% and cleared the path to raise it more without a corresponding reduction elsewhere. Why do our State politicians suck?

Can you really compare LA to TX and FL? Both are much larger than LA therefore more people spending money. Also, FL has a huge tourist base spending money.

Isn’t EBT tax free when used?
I’m against any new taxes or raising them at all but I also realize it’s a necessity. If you’re going to tax, tax on consumption, not income or property.

The extra 0.55 sales tax rate that was put on is $660 million— and some of that is paid by businesses or tourists not LA taxpayers (~ 40%)
Sorry, but I don’t believe you. Google says the 2025 state budget is $49.63 billion! Per you, 0.55% sales tax increase will generate $660 million. Surely, the governor can find $660 million (out of $50 billion) in government waste to cut and not raise the sales taxes!!
Louisiana has terrible schools, terrible highways, and unsustainable home insurance. Businesses are not coming here, sorry. Again, these tax “reforms” will do nothing.

Yes, because the ONLY things anyone should spend their money on are unprepared groceries.
Give me a break. This is absolutely a dumb idea and mindset.

Another “conservative” who loves taxes.
I abhor taxes, but they are justifiable at the state level in my opinion because as the country (and its government) was established under the Constitution, the states would be the governmental entity providing whatever "services" it's citizens wanted.
The federal government is way too fricking big and intrusive, and it is fed by income taxes (and debt).
So, one can be conservative and still not be completely against taxes at the state level.

But overall the tax burden is going down.

Correct.
They didnt get everything, but got about 90% and it will posture the state to be more competitive in attracting business in the future.
And I think Landry is a fricking idiot.

A lot of ignorance and shitty takes in here.
- We’re facing a 3.3 billion dollar deficit thanks to JBE budgeting one time Covid money in the general fund.
- JBE also ran out a lot of oil and gas so we have to try and recoup that revenue.
- Landry has issued a number of cuts to the executive branch of govt to start cutting.
- Louisiana is over taxed but hits the working class harder. Increasing a sales tax makes it so that everyone pays more, even the leeches.
- Re-writing the tax code lets you know how much in services the state will have to cut this round.
- Louisiana also has its own DOGE in the works and I expect that we’ll see a lot trimmed after that.
- Landry has said he’d like to get us to 0% income tax and I think we’re just in the beginning
- We are an arse backwards state and it takes a few years to really see the harm or benefit of these situations
- lastly, a majority of your reps thought this was a good idea and were privy to more data than what’s in the article.
Let’s agree to bitch when this results in disaster.

Furthermore, when you’re the only southern state that is actually losing tax payers through population decline, this will only further exacerbate the problems in Louisiana, not improve them. BUT, that’s what’s really going on here. They can shine it on all they like, but they are experiencing shortfalls in revenue, and that’s the big hole you get in. You have to raise taxes to make up for people leaving, which in turn causes more people to leave, and more taxes have to be raised. It’s called a death spiral.

Cut whatever spending...just use it to lower the income tax more not the sales tax (bitching about sales tax is dumb since it's the only thing takers pay).
Cut all the credits the governor proposed cutting but legislature kept (like movie) and get the income tax lower!
