Baton Rouge legislator files bill to make zoo move illegal

quote:

State Rep. Barbara Carpenter, a Democrat whose north Baton Rouge district includes the zoo’s current home in Greenwood Park, has filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session that would prohibit BREC from moving the zoo out of north Baton Rouge.

quote:

House Bill 481 would amend the state law that created BREC, prohibiting the commission from “acquiring, leasing, developing, operating or managing” … a zoo unless it is located in a certain 600-acre area in north Baton Rouge.

quote:

Carpenter says her bill has the support of the mayors of Baker, Central and Zachary in north Baton Rouge as well as Mayor Sharon Weston Broome. More importantly, though, she believes she has support from enough of her fellow legislators to pass the measure, which must first be heard by the House Municipal and Governmental Affairs Committee.

UPDATE:

Second bill taking aim at BREC planned for Louisiana legislative session

quote:

State Sen. Regina Barrow, a vocal opponent of BREC’s efforts to relocate the zoo out of its Greenwood Park home in her north Baton Rouge district, says she will file a bill when the Legislature convenes Monday to change the composition of the BREC Board of Commissioners. The bill would give the Louisiana Legislature appointment power over three seats on the nine-member board.

quote:

Barrow says her bill would allow state legislators to have a say over who serves on the commission. “I believe the Legislature should have representation on the board, just as the Metro Council does,” Barrow says. “People come to us about BREC-related issues, so I think we should have representation.”

quote:

The bill gives appointment power over the three legislative seats only to lawmakers from north Baton Rouge, two of whom are herself and Carpenter.

I don't think the Louisiana legislature should get involved in a local park.

How about they move the real zoo, and she can turn the old one into a murder park for her constituents.

Glad to see she's spending her time doing this kind of crap instead of acting like an adult and getting the state budget issue settled.

Louisiana legislature should spend their time working on a budget, where to cut, where to save, and whats best for the state.

This should get the St. George folks fired up.

This isn't a state issue, its a local(parish) issue.
I don't like the state sticking their nose in our business.

But this zoo thing is really amazing to me. I don't know many who really want the zoo on Airline at the Fairgrounds except for the BREC commissioner and their board. Most seemed to be against it.

I don't see any support for a new tax to fund a zoo. I haven't seen any civic minded groups pushing for the new zoo.

But the zoo is going to be moved come hell or high water according to BREC.

Some of my family just took their kids to the zoo, and found it less than desirable. Many exhibits had no animals, and its as if BREC letting the current zoo slide to reinforce their efforts to build a new one. They were disappointed in the product they found.

It's the craziest thing I've seen in awhile. From what I see we have an independent body forcing their wishes on the parish and they aren't going to stop, but it shouldn't be the state's role to do the stopping.
