It seems like I heard that LA was changing the law so that you have to pay sales tax on the total sales amount, even the value of your trade-in.

True? Has it taken effect yet?

Trade in is still exempt, but your rebates are now taxed.

Sounds like you may as well buy the car out of state.

Would not change anything, sales tax is applied at rate of address in which the car is registered

I just bought a truck last week, so no. I have not heard of anyone pushing this so no. The car dealer lobby would be so far up JBE arse it would take an f350 with truck nuts to pull them out.

You pay the tax in the state you register the car in not the state you buy it in. (unless it's Michigan)

I bet a lot of people in LA have been googling Montana LLC lately.

True, but it would most likely be based on purchase price only, and would not include any rebates. Or, at least, the dealer would work on helping you make it appear that way (La. has no jurisdiction to punish an out of state dealer).

it is shitty.

I sel you a TV I have it listed for $1200 but it's black Friday and I sell it for $400.
Well since you bought it at my shop in NOLA, I would charge $40 in tax (10% state/local sales) well this law it would be like charging $120 in tax on the $400 TV. (being simple)

The system sounds like total bullshite.

It is total BS and those like JBE that want to raise taxes to preserve big government are to blame.

We need a law like Arkansas. If you sell a used car to a private person within 45 after you bought a new car, you get a sales tax credit just like if you had traded in. LINK

In LA, the dealer can low ball the trade a bit, because he knows you would have to private sell your old car for much more to make up the fricking sales tax hit.

The AR law puts the consumer in a more even and fair position.
