Cigarette smokers cost a shite ton in health care costs. They should tax them to oblivion. I assume you are cool with social welfare and free medical.

Uh, no.

Should they also tax fast food, unhealthy food at grocery stores, and alcohol?

Life is about pain, hate and misery. A cigarette is one of the few things that can give a person a glimmer of happiness. Why do you want to tax happiness?

If you knew how many people on Medicaid smoke a pack a day you might change your tune. Poor, obese, diabetic...you pay for their medicine and in-home care. And you pay for their cigarettes.

I'm for the legalization of drugs. As long as they are taxed at a level that would provide the money to offset their health costs.

Good thing cigarette manufacturers have deals on them. Camel usually has $0.75 off per pack

It's fundamentally stupid to base a budget-saving tax on something under the guise of preventing the behavior you are taxing.

So, if it works and people stop smoking, we're still up shite creek; if it doesn't, then we just tax-fricked citizens for poor cause.

The problem is that when they start making money, they'll immediately find something new to spend it on and nothing gets fixed

1. Alcohol is already taxed LINK
2. We should add a sin tax to junk food and fast food. We should do like NYC and tax for large sodas, but instead tax by the ounce for all sodas and junk food. Then use the money to help pay for medicaid and Obamacare or its replacement.
3. Tax the frick out of smokers

Am I getting this right? Tax increases should be reserved for the poor, obese and/or addicts?

Yet wealthy people and businesses should pay nothing, ever?

How does that solve anything?

Oh look another "but State Police got a raise" moron.

That isn't from state funds. It is money that will come from a revenue stream from uninsured drivers penalties (that yall love to bitch about, rightfully so) and not money from tickets (because most of you idiots think LSP gets money from traffic tickets... They don't).

Second, OT and Poli Board loves to bitch about police being dumb and unprofessional. Well State Police wants a raise that will reward the Troopers who choose the career because they are held to a high standard and train more than any other police around here.

Third, everyone loves to bitch about New Orleans crime. State Police starts sending troopers (some from all the way across the state away from family) to work the French Quarter, and a bunch of firearms and dangerous drugs and dangerous criminals get arrested, and it goes back to number one, bitching about their raise. Get a clue sometimes people.

In before :well we know who is a cop now: I am not.

As to the OP, yeah it's common occurrence and its bullshite. That is all.

Yep. Feeble minded pawns like Artie Rome fail to see anything is wrong with an arbitrary band-aid tax increase because it doesn't affect them. Until it does.
