Contact tracing racks up $30 million in costs but hasn't worked out like officials hoped

Seven months and $30 million later, the program has not produced the type of results health experts initially wanted. Fewer than a third of people reached by the hundreds of contact tracers have shared close contacts, according to data provided by the Louisiana Department of Health, though the rate has improved slightly in recent months. And the number of people reached is still lower than 70% of cases.
quote:
In all, the program has successfully reached a little over 47,000 people identified as close contacts of people infected with COVID-19, meaning the state has spent about $632 per person.
quote:
Susanne Straif-Bourgeois, a former Louisiana Department of Health official who now teaches epidemiology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, suggested with the vaccine so close, the contact tracing money could be better used elsewhere.
quote:
“I really don’t think (contact tracing) works in pandemic circumstances,” she said. “Clearly, I don’t think it worked as we would have hoped it could have worked.”
quote:
The callers hired by the state to do the work face several roadblocks. Aly Neel, a Health Department spokeswoman, said the largest barrier is a lack of accurate contact information. The phone numbers provided by testing centers and other health providers are often missing or inaccurate.
quote:
In June and July, fewer than 20% of people interviewed by the Health Department shared close contacts with the contact tracers
quote:
In recent months, the number of people providing contacts to the agency has ticked up, to 48% in October and 44% in November, through the 13th.

Is it cell phones that they use to determine this?

Well of course it didn’t,,,mark my word, they will continue doing this,,,,”when the government doesn’t work, add more govt.”

Our governor is wise. We shall not criticize.

Louisiana knows how to waste money the best!
Doesn’t matter if you’re Democrat or Republican - if there’s money to waste it will be done!

Any thinking person understood this back in March. Contact tracing works well with things like HIV and STDs. Not so much for respiratory viruses that spread like the common cold. What a massive fail and a waste of money. Now, lets "trace" the money to see who got paid for this.

Some state rep's brother probably has a company called Pelican Health that got most of that money.

Actually - it was probably a state rep’s brother in law - so no one violates the ethics rules

The way I understand it is I get sick & test positive
My name & contact information is turned over to contact tracers who call me
IF I answer I give them the names & contact info of people that I had close contact with recently
They then call those people
No clue what happens after that, do they tell them to get tested?
Do they ask for contact info of the people they have had close contact with?
I would like to know how far down the line they go, would also like to know how many people are employed to do this

It is perfect for fast moving and deadly viruses like Ebola. You know, the kind of illness where you're not traipsing around Walmart because you're too busy trying not to die.

The money is just being stolen, man. That’s all. That was ever intended.

I know for a fact the state of Alabama was using Twitter to find people interested in being a contact tracer.
It didn't give me high hopes knowing that the whole program was riding on Melba who was a waitress at Waffle House before corona.
