I had a bulging disc at L5-S1 when I was 31 years old in 1987. A neurosurgeon did a microdiscectomy, I had immediate pain relief (Had leg pain). Have been fine since. See a neurosurgeon (a good one), not an orthopedic surgeon.

I had an L5-S1 herniation and tried many alternatives before waking up one morning and not being able to get out of bed. It was a Saturday and so spent a miserable weekend in agony. Had the surgery on the next Wednesday and woke up pain free. Its been good since....that was 17 years ago. Well....I did herniate another disc being stupid 6 years later.....had surgery immediately and have been good ever since. I even run once or twice a week now.

In all seriousness find a physical therapist who is certified in mechanical diagnosis and treatment (MDT). As long as you have not extruded the nucleus (blown out the disc) you should have some success with this treatment approach. I'm a PT at a spine clinic and I see people with your symptoms all day everyday. Go give it a try before you decide to have surgery. What area are you in?
MDT method

I ould love if you could give me a name tjough. My pt is like a mill, 3-4 patients spread amongst a pt assistant

I have had L5 S1 herniation for over 10 years now and chose not to have surgery. Constant numbness down right leg and two outside toes go numb if I do high impact work like running for over 5 minutes but back pain is not that bad.

If they do surgery your nmback won't ever be the same.

I've had that injury with three flare-ups in 12 years. It hurts badly for about a week then the pain slowly tapers away. I've found Ibuprofen to be the most effective for pain in my case. Based on MRI, my disc space has shrunk but the protrusion is less significant.

Can't jog because the next week i'll feel like someone has put a tuning fork in my arse and I get a hot foot sensation.

HNP is easily corrected surgically (most of the time) by a neuro or orthopedic surgeon (fellowship trained in spinal surgery). A single intervertebral level is usually a one night hospital stay. You'll have to avoid sitting up for a while, but walking is good for the recovery. Best wishes, man.

ETA: post surgery, keep in mind that you will have additional pain for awhile, both from the small surgical incision/associated swelling from manipulation of the tissue in surgery, AND from the healing process of the nerve itself.

How long was recovery? I have a 20 month old child that needs to be picked up 1000 times a day. That's what I'm concerned about.

I have L5-S1. This may sound silly but yoga has really helped. I go to yoga with someone who specializes in doing it for these types of injuries. It has helped me a lot.

Go see Dr. Ken Vogel. He will do a discogram and 12 level lumbar fusion immediately after. Then see your lawyer and get you $250k or so.

To the OP, I would try injections before jumping into surgery unless you have focal weakness or bladder issues.

I had the same thing only in the L-4 L-5. Herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease. For 6 years I was miserable. Tried alternative methods for pain relief, pain shots, epidural steroid injections, radio frequency ablation therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy. Nothing worked long term. I finally said screw this crap and had a hemilaminectomy surgery this past March 16, at the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa Florida. Dr Reginald Davis did my surgery, outstanding individual that man is. 6 months later I feel pretty damn good. I'm at about 90% right now. People don't understand how constant pain puts a mental and physical strain on the person and everyone around them. It's definitely debilitating.

I am definitely hoping to avoid surgery or at least kick that can down the road until my 20 month old doesn't need me to pick her up all the time. My back is totally pain free, since getting my gabapentin to 1200mg a day my only pain is buttock spasms 24x7. Hopefully the physiatrist can provide a roadmap that works for me.

Be careful with the gabapentin sir. I know it depends on the individual but I had no luck with those. Left me in a constant fog, and a appetite outta this world. I quit taking them all at once and it was bad.
