It'll be interesting to see what all there is to it since she's the first charged under the new law. With what the law defines of grooming behavior, it indicates there has to be some intent to eventually develop a sexual relationship. It can't be just secretively meeting and messaging students (there's another law that addresses that BTW).

She'll almost certainly lose her teaching license though, especially since the state also passed a law the year before banning teachers from messaging students outside of some pretty strict, school-based protocols (caused some issues for coaches as a result):

For the grooming law, yes. But in Kentucky the age of consent is 16, so that's probably part of it.

That said, any communications a teacher, coach, or staff member has with a student has to be in certain forms or they can get in legal trouble as per SB 181 (2025). And that covers up to the age of 18. SB 181 on student communication

It's no longer a criminal charge because they're a legal adult.

It'll get your teaching licensed pulled in Kentucky if it happens in K-12. But it's no longer a criminal charge when the minor isn't a legal minor anymore. I know some states treat that differently, but that's Kentucky's law.

In University, it may be an ethical violation. At that point its consenting adults (as far as the law is concerned). What states file criminal charges on an 18 year old college student engaging in a relationship with an older professor? I'd be surprised if there any at this point.

Now, it's a major ETHICAL violation that can violate morality clauses in a job contract. That's a whole different ball of wax.
