In University, it may be an ethical violation. At that point its consenting adults (as far as the law is concerned). What states file criminal charges on an 18 year old college student engaging in a relationship with an older professor? I'd be surprised if there any at this point.

Now, it's a major ETHICAL violation that can violate morality clauses in a job contract. That's a whole different ball of wax.

Apparently, there are some states where a professor at a college romantically involved with an adult student from one of his classes can be charged with a crime. It falls into the "position of authority" category.
