Their kids, dumbass kids is the threat to old money. Combined with the internet and their need for social media. Won’t be so cool to be in Comus and not blab about it.

Those trust fund docs have a "no social media" clause for sure.

Now, some of these kids will mess that up. But doing so will basically be like getting cut off from the family wealth.

I heard a factoid today, most family, generational wealth is gone in three generations.

3 or 4... depending on the amount.

First generation earns it.

Second generation remembers the time before the first generation earned it... so they tend to respect it... they also tend to be more involved in the activities that created the wealth.

Third generation never knew a time without the family wealth, and have no idea how to maintain it, much less build it.

Sometimes there is so much money that it makes it to a fourth generation, which is even more clueless.

Made sense for older generations, may not be as quick going forward. We don’t produce kids like we use to spreading out the wealth as much.

That is entirely likely. It makes "sense" given human nature.

I know one guy who might be, not sure but he has some association with the Boston Club. I knew him at LSU, he was from out of state but had relatives in New Orleans. He was a full fledged alcoholic by his third year and I'm almost certain he never graduated. I figured he would end up dead or homeless, but he shows up on social media several years later as the head of a big SE LA real estate outfit. Still drinking like a fish, with unmistakeable signs of liver disease

Thanks for the insights, Oweo.

Good luck enforcing it. Would be an interesting case, wouldn’t make the news most likely to see if it was tested.

Depends on the family

Real old money in this country goes back to its founding and they still have it. Quiet, low key, they do no "look" like the rich you see in media. New money is flash, and they can become old money by blending in, not standing out. Most new money rasise weak kids and they breed weaker grandkids. That money is toast in 3 generations or less.

Most inbred city on earth is not in the South and it is inbred because all those family trusts marry only in that circle. That money spits out smaller shares as generations multiply, but it does not dissipate.

This happens sometimes, but there is usually more to it. Large fortunes are more often dispersed over time rather than lost. Let's say mom and dad have $50 million. That ends up getting split up among multiple kids, and then over the next generation it gets split up across a lot more offspring. All it takes is a few generations for that large fortune to be gone.

Up East, in that part of the country. I always laugh when folks thing the Bushes are Texans.

They start in that circle in diapers, same posh grade schools, then prep, then Ivy or near Ivy.

As for colleges, just Michigan and Virginia are "publics" but really operate culturally like privates. UNC is a step down and "new" money because it took a donor in the mid 1800's to elevate them, but they are still more like a state school.

“These guys” can talk to any official they want to, and the party hasn’t meant much to them in decades. When the party did matter, they were Democrats - not all that long ago - and you can bet many still are.

Any of these high society krewes, the kids always go to ACC schools. UVA, UNC and the like, not quite smart enough for Ivy league, but think they are above schools like LSU. Always find that funny.
