I want answers.
Had ATC not allowed the helicopter to take off and ultimately fly in fog, (LAPD helicopters were grounded) Kobe and the rest of his travel companions would likely be alive.
It's total human error.

What I gather from this story is that going to church is a waste of time.

why is this even a big deal
It isn't. But people look at fortune and fame as the "be all, end all" salve that can solve all of your problems. It's nice to see someone who has that who still makes time for God, has faith, and is raising his children to be the same way. Look, I haven't set foot in a church in years. I'm not proud of that. So, I admire anyone who makes time for God. It's easy to say you believe, but it's something else to "walk the walk."
And if you don't believe, it's all good. I'm not judging anyone for how they live their life. But he believed in God and obviously made an effort to live a Christian life.

The Duke converted to Catholicism just before he died...

ATC wasn't going to stop this, but the pilot is to blame. LAPD helicopters weren't flying because of the fog and there was no reason for them to be in the air. That's different than a private citizen wanting to move around the city.

What is supposed to be the significance of this statement?

One of the articles I read stated that the pilot had to get special permission to fly through the fog, i.e., visual flight rules?
If that's the case, why could permission have not been granted?

Instances like these should really question your faith.
I'd love to hear the complete rationale behind a situation like this where a person apparently turns his life around for the good (not that Kobe was ever bad), he's trying to be a good father, then bam, whole life gone.
If you think that the intended outcome of faith, hope, and love is meant to be a longer earthly existence, I can see why this situation would make you confused.

Is that better than a devout Jehovah witness, Mormon, Muslim, etc?
There are Jews in the world
There are Buddhists
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm
You don't have to be a six-footer
You don't have to have a great brain
You don't have to have any clothes on You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred
Every sperm is great
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate

That’s awesome. I’m sure this will irritate the loud and proud atheists.
