I don't know if I could stomach being around all that Orange but it does seem like a nice place. I came only once (don't remember the year...julio was still playing--2010 maybe?)
I'm also really impressed by Nashville and Chattanooga. Memphis has a mini-New Orleans thing going on for it, for better or worse. Tennessee has a nicely diverse set of cities.
I could see me retiring somewhere in Tennessee or Carolina.

Property tax in Knox county is slightly higher than EBR, sales tax is slightly lower. Overall tax burden is undoubtedly less, and property values are overall lower, but of course depends on location.

Knox really grew on me during my time there. I hated it at first, but then really came to appreciate it.
It's a quaint, medium-sized city in the valley that is indeed reinventing itself. Quite an underrated brewery and outdoors scene, and 30 minutes from the heart of the Smokies. The government leadership is actually competent, i.e., not stupid, corrupt Democrats that seem to get their hands on every major city.
I wouldn't live there as a single 28-y/o, but would definitely look into settling down there.

One of the weirdest things to me about Knoxville is that it doesn't really seem to have much of a college bar scene.
I don't really care at this point in my life, but where do UT kids go? There are only a few bars on Cumberland, it's mostly chain restaurants and shite now.

The bar scene on the Strip (Cumberland) was much better during my freshman and sophomore years (2011-2012). Tin Roof, Rumorz, OCI, and Cool Beans were all really good spots. All except Cool Beans have since shut down, and CB gets way overcrowded with the kids who don't want to pay premium prices for draft beer at Half Barrel or the new Fieldhouse bar by the Publix/Walmart.
We'd either go to house parties or occasionally the Old City during my senior year. Problem with the Old City is that it's a little over a mile trek for those who live on campus, and lately it's been full of Magnolia (east Knox) trash.

Took a family vacation to Gatlinburg a month ago. We stopped in Knoxville on the way home to grab some lunch. Beautiful campus! I've never seen UT campus. Although I'm more partial to Tiger Stadium than Neyland, to be honest.
One thing I wasn't crazy about, was all the gay pride stuff downtown was a bit overdone, in my opinion. But otherwise than that, I was impressed with downtown area and the campus itself.

Meh. As an alum, I even admit that UT's campus is quite average as far as aesthetics. The river and surrounding scenery makes up for it though.
