Yeah we missed the boat on these, I didn't even know they existed until we were struggling with the 4th on 2 wheels. I believe they work because I've seen tiny neighbor kids get it done quickly that way.

We bought the "Woom" brand with the hand-brake. It's a bit expensive ($200 I think), but it is really well made (aluminum frame) and looks cool. They actually have a few different sizes available.

The woom bikes are amazing. We had something cheaper for balance bikes but both our boys got woom bikes for their first pedal bikes. Just jumped on and rode off like they had been doing it forever. I was blown away how easy it was.

A balance bike is much better than a bike with training wheels. All a bike witch training wheels teaches them to do is to lean on and rely on the training wheels…. which is literally the opposite of what teaching them to ride should be.
If you have already bought a bike with training wheels, simply take off the pedals and/or cranks and boom…. You have a balance bike.

Training wheels are adjustable, precisely to teach them. Let them ride with them down for a bit, then move them up. Ride behind them and say hey, your on the wheel…they start balancing again…it’s all how you approach it. If you don’t want to ride with them and teach, a balance bike is better. If you offer your time a 12” real bike is better. My boy rode no training wheels at 3.

We used one with all of our kids, and the time it took them to transition off of training wheels was inversely proportional to the time they spent on the balance bike.
