Kids and ATV accidents

Every year we hear about children dying or being seriously injured riding on ATVs.
Recently, a couple in Texas lost their 10 year old son to an ATV accident just a few days after Thanksgiving. The mom had just changed her Facebook filter of her family from "I'm Thankful for Us" to "Merry Christmas." Reading the comments of "you have a beautiful family" to "I am so sorry for your loss" was heartbreaking.
One of my managers lost his brother a few years ago to an ATV accident. He was also around 10 years old.
For those who own them and allow your kids to ride them, please make sure they fully understand the seriousness of riding a machine that can indeed cause harm or death in the event of an accident or careless operation. So many kids, and some adults, are oblivious to their own mortality.

I’ve helped with a 9 y/o boy dying from one. Not a scratch on him. And a 11 y/o girl who busted her head wide open and passed away too. 2 things i will never forget.

My son has been riding them alone since he was 10. He’s never allowed on the big automatics and is only allowed to ride no higher than 2nd or 3rd gear. And he absolutely has to wear a helmet.
ETA: he’s 13 now and still has restrictions

My first ATV was a 3 wheeler and I think I was 8 years old.
I think back and wonder how I didn’t kill or seriously injure myself on that thing because I did some dumb arse shite every day, day after day.
I can’t even think of a kid that got hurt back then that I knew.
70’s and 80’s kids had some sort of force field around them.

It's why I never got them for my kids. Not a single school year goes by that I don't have at least one of my students (7th grade) hurt in an ATV accident.

Flew an airmed helicopter and it was almost a given that every thanksgiving and Christmas Day would be multiple kid atv accidents

Did you ever fly in the LC area?
Posted on 12/2/17 at 4:35 pm to LZ83
Only briefly about ten years ago. Have friends that are there and Alexandria now

I worked at Memorial from 2006 to 2008. I? think the chopper brought in both those I? was talking about.

I know a 20 something, just married, just started new job type of guy that ran into a tree. Sucks for his family. I feel like you just have to give to stupid shite like ATVs when you have others depending on you

I was the bad guy at my grandchild’s birthday. The older girls wanted to ride the toddlers on the 4 wheelers. I shut it down. The toddlers wouldn’t even remember the ride. That shite was so people would look at them riding and say ,” aw how cute “. Bullshite that’s how toddlers get killed, maimed or crippled.

I got my first Honda 50 I believe... around 86-87 when I was around 6-7ish. It had a pull cord, that an adult walked behind and if I would get out of hand, they could pull the cord and it would kill the bike. I blame most accidents on inexperience and parents buying bike that's way too big and too fast for little johnny who has never rode before, but dad wants him to look cool at the camp and turns him lose to show his arse and next thing you know he's crashed or tore up some shite cause he didn't know how to handle the bike.

My lil brother went to a birthday party for a kid when he was about 8 or 9. The kid having the birthday was riding a motorcycle and either ran into a tree or got clipped by a low hanging branch. Either way, the kid died right there at his own bday party.
I’d love to buy my kid something. Will never happen. I don’t think parents who do are irresponsible or anything, just for me personally, I can’t fathom how they weigh out the risk/reward in their head

I know of several people who had ATV accidents while I was in school.
It’s truly a wonder I never injured myself doing the dumb shite I did. One time I flipped it over on top of myself and I was about 130 pounds back then as a kid. Really skinny kid. If it hadn’t have rolled over me completely I could have been stuck in the field for hours. Also laid it down at end of my gravel driveway almost into the highway into traffic. Just stupid shite.

My first atv was a 200X 3 wheeler in middle school. I consider myself one of the lucky ones

I remember driving my uncles 3 wheeler when I was a kid. He had property in Plaq Parish next to the River levee. Even has a dumb kid, that three wheeler scared me. Felt like it wanted to flip at every turn.

A family friend of ours who is like 50 broke his neck on a 4-wheeler a few years back. Helmet and everything.
Paralyzed from the neck down.
It doesn’t only pertain to kids.
