Well you aren't going to lose weight and gain muscle on any diet unless you are new to working out or just starting back.
You can't lose WEIGHT and gain muscle but you can most definitely lose FAT and gain muscle.

A beginner can lose weight and gain muscle if there is an excess of protein. There was a study released a few weeks ago that touched on it

Even that is very difficult without "help."

I did read a study recently about purely newb gainz. Up to maybe 20 lbs lean in the first year?

I'd agree with most of your last two post. Can you explain to me what a "balanced diet" is?
Poor Hulk, we are all behind him, but he jumped off keto a while back, he may be lower carb, but not keto. He may be more insulin resistant than he thinks. Since he felt like crap without
A basic balanced diet would be 40% of calories from protein, 40% from carbs and 20% from fat. if it meets your macros so be it.
quote:
Doesn't this include all ways of eating?
yes but it just seems when people deprive themselves for long periods they tend to binge more. i.e. yo yo dieting
quote:
I think leangains is a solid program. How many carbs does it take to back load?
as far as leangains goes and carb back loading that is dependent on the person and dependent the type of workout they did before hand. But in general it lg would look something like this for a 200lbs sedetary male with 15% bf looking at eating at bmr on lift days and -20% on rest days
lift days
protein-275g
fat-15g
carbs-310g
so 45%p/50%c/5%f @ BMR
Rest Days
protein-275g
fat-90g
Carbs-25g
so 55%p/5%c/40%f @ -20% of bmr or about -500 cals
this would cause a deficit just from diet. When you factor in cals burned from lifting and the fasted walks you are looking at about 1.5 lbs of pretty much pure fat burned a week. As you can see that is 6% of pure fat over a month and you can see how it adds up over the months.
this diet allows for tons of flexibility especially in social settings. Think you will be going to dinner most Fridays, well lift before hand and you can have what you want. DO you love sushi, good eat it after lifting. Love nuttella and bk chicken fries....have at it. Want ice cream...have fun. Now granted these kinds of choices will slow fat loss down some(especially those containing fructose which replenishes liver glycogen) but the effect is minuscule compared to the overall fat burn.
this diet would be combined with a heavy lifting program three days a week. greyskull lp for beginners and intermediates(mostly everyone) or reverse pyramid training or 5/3/1 for those a little more advanced.
also fasted walks are recommended along with some type of metabolic conditioning after lifting for no more than 10 min.
try to eat 90% of carbs after lifting.
thats pretty much the program in a nut shell.

whoa there Nellie....i never said I didn't binge sometimes. in fact i do quite often but i understand the basics enough to minimize the effects. i.e. fast/feast
and I am not nearly as ripped as Rocket, thats for sure but I will be by summer vacation.
I absolutely love to eat. And if i let my inner fat kid out I balloon up in a heart beat. I have to be very diligent.

its very very possible to recomp. key is layering it in. The greyskull principles are very very good at allowing this to happen.
you layer in tons of body weight work for added volume without the stress. also tons of fasted walks.
If recomp is your goal I highly recommend the greyskull LCI program(look on scribd under tdlsu777) combined with the lean gains protocol i posted above.

Yeah I guess you can lose weight and gain muscle if the water and fat loss is in excess to the gain of muscle. I stand corrected. Forgot about newb gainz

My point is simply that you can't be 300 lbs and say "frick it, I have a wedding." It wasn't two weddings. It was a lifelong pattern.

impossible to lose weight and gain muscle?
Posted on 3/3/16 at 12:16 pm to Lester Earl
for most people he is correct, of course most people don't have the dedication or balls to put in the work it takes to make it happen.

unless you are a natty bodybuilder with an extremely developed physique then this is pure bullshite. its very very possible.

It is extremely difficult to do both if you're not starting out.
Usually less efficient too than bulking/cutting
Posted on 3/3/16 at 12:18 pm to TigerBait1127
TB is correct its less efficient and most end up spinning their wheels due to lack of knowledge or commitment.

well yea, it is quite the blanket statement to say its impossible without the help of an experienced lifter.
anyone that starts out over weight is generally going to lose weight and gain muscle if they do things properly. Yea eventually the weight loss can and will stall,
I think losing weight and gaining muscle is more common than uncommon, especially considering the huge part of the population that is overweight and engaging in exercise.

haha yea I agree with that. Look its ok to binge for a night, its quite healthy for the mind especially to do it. what matters is overall macros. we don't live in a bubble, the macros count over a week/month/year like you said.
what i mean by that is a one night binge won't hurt anybody if after a week he is still down 3000cals overall or over a month if you are down 15k-24k calories. But the opposite is true to. Being up 2000 over a week is nothing but that adds up over months/years.
I think the thing that bothers me so much in these threads is every ones inability to give up alcohol and their overall reliance on it. I guess I don't understand it because I grew up in a household who only drank at special occasions or at most on Saturday night. I also don't drink that often even when at parties and this is especially true when I am trying to lose fat.

It is not only accepted but encouraged. I haven't had a drink since before starting this diet. I don't think it is a coincidence.

Possibly for beginners

I mean if you're at a deficit, you're unlikely to lose fat and gain muscle over the long term. It is either one or the other unless you're perfectly disciplined
I'm not talking about strength either. That brings the CNS into play
I'll look into some studies later when I have the time.
