I know it will be impossible to completely keep it from him, but he’s almost 12 now, and I’d like to at least try. I live in Texas, which like Louisiana apparently passed a law that you have to enter information showing you are 18; however, I can open a private tab on my phone right now and see anything I want. Why isn’t it working? Is the law that easy to get around?

At 12 years old he's already seen every video on pornhub. You're too late dad

Look into the Bark app. It monitors your kid’s phone and will alert you if he visits pron sites, is sending or receiving inappropriate messages and other features.

I don’t think Texas has any laws. Even in Louisiana, only a few sites are blocked. Impossible to block them all as some don’t fall under jurisdiction.

The best way is to talk with him. I’m glad I’m not raising kids in todays times.

Good. Making it a challenge is good for him even if you know he'll circumvent it.

We had natural obstacles, these kids won't

If he doesn't figure it out, his friends will.

This is really important. Parents need to make sure they talk to their kids about why it’s bad, and not make it such a taboo subject.

I once walked 5 miles and traversed a patch of woods on a rumor that there was a half a Playboy in a hollowed out tree.

The boy is gonna find porn.

I am going to keep this really simple. The law is only as good as the ISP you are using. Some ISP's, even though you are physically connnected to a network in Louisiana, will actually show you being in another state. So the filter on the porn sites won't even prompt you for age verification. Pretty much any VPN that masks your location and IP, will keep any verify's from working. So you are fighting a losing battle imo. He's going to watch it, my advice would be to just talk to your kid about it. Better it come from you, than for him to learn about it from the web. I am in the same boat fella. I am just glad my son is a very neive and immature 13, and he's not looking it up right now. Plus I know how to watch traffic on my home network, so there's that.

Every great tech entrepreneur started this way OP

Your boy's chances of becoming a billionaire are directly correlated to how many technological obstacles you put in the way for him right now

It takes an intermediate level of expertise but you can set up your house to block unapproved sites. You presumably pay for his phone so you can limit him to a flip phone or BlackBerry, or make arrangements with your carrier.
