SS John Burke (MC hull number 609) was an American Liberty Ship built during World War II, one of the 2,710 type 'EC2-S-C1' ships that carried all kinds and types of dry cargo during the war.[4] The ship was named for John Burke (February 25, 1859 – May 14, 1937), the 10th Governor of North Dakota. Burke was built at Kaiser Shipbuilding Company's Oregon Shipbuilding yard in Portland, Oregon. Burke's keel was laid November 20, 1942[4] and the hull was launched on December 13.[4] After fitting-out, Burke was delivered to the US Maritime Commission on December 23,[4] just 33 days after construction began. The War Shipping Administration then placed Burke under management of the Northland Transportation Company.[1]

On December 28, 1944, while transporting ammunition to Mindoro, Philippines, Burke was hit by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft, and disintegrated in a tremendous explosion.[5][6] John Burke was one of three Liberty Ships[7] and one of forty-seven ships sunk by kamikaze attack during World War II.[8]

Can you edit your title to include “not today”. I thought we were going to war with the Japs again

Barham was the largest battleship sunk in WWII by a U-boat- 841 men were killed. News of the sinking was suppressed until 1942, and footage of the event wasn't released until the end of the war.

I came here to post the Barham explosion too. The Yamato blew up in similarly spectacular fashion, as did the Hood.

Kamikazes generally went after warships. They would have been more effective attacking the logistics train.

That looks more like the atomic blast over the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. The way the video cuts out just prior to the blast is suspect.

Tragic, but pales in comparison to the HMS HOOD a British Battleship sunk by the German's Bismark where only 3 of their 1,418 crewmen survived.
