people here will give you shite but, that place is pretty cool. Especially considering all of that was done more than 40 years ago. He may have died fairly young but he fricking lived life!

Jungle Room FTW

There's a list out there somewhere that has all of the things Elvis's staff had stocked at all times. It was pretty ridiculous as a lot of the items were baked goods that had to be remade daily. My friends and I joked if we ever made it big we'd have our own "Elvis list" of ridiculous things available to us at any time.

I'm a bigger Elvis fan than most but not a "hang out outside Graceland and cry" big Elvis fan.

I found the garishness of Graceland to be so awesome. As we see it today is not how it was when the King died. It was all red and black when he died. Even more garish. "Scilla" re-did it to fit the way she had it decorated when she lived there.

Elvis was just a dirt poor backwards arse hillbilly that wanted to make his momma proud and comfortable. She died when he was young and he wound up isolated from the world because of his fame and surrounded by enablers living off of him. Towards the end his financial situation was very tenuous. He was doing shows just to cover his insane spending and The Col's gambling debts.

If anyone is interested The best books on Elvis are the two part "Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley" and "Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley" by Peter Guarlnick. Long reads but comprehensive. The books do an amazing job of relating why Elvis was so huge when he started out. He really was like nothing the world had seen before. The books will really make you feel bad for him. Even though he was in to underage girls.

I've been several times and yes the decor is gaudy although was pretty cool for the time. Always enjoy it and it's really amazing to think of him living in that home.

Isnt his bedroom red and black? What did Elvis get into the last years of his life?

I went for the 20th Anniversary of his death. It was a complete fricking circus.

The thing I remember most about the jets is that one if them had a queen sized bed (w/ a blue velour bedspread) in the back that had a gold seatbelt across it. Apparently Elvis was sometimes fast asleep before wheels up. Law abiding citizen that he was, he wore his seatbelt in accordance with FAA regulations.
