My wife (no pics) has a 2015 4Runner and it is slow and feels underpowered when getting into the interstate and/or pulling our golf cart. Plus the v6 has less than stellar gas mileage. My 21 F150 with the 5.0 got much better mileage and my 24 Silverado with the 5.3 gets better mileage. So yes, a dog.

That being said, it is incredibly reliable and we plan to keep it until it dies or I we become OT rich. We didn’t buy it to drag race.

True

You are aware that the Land Cruiser had 4 and 6 cylinder engines for most of its history, right?

Kind of true...

US versions had straight sixes from the FJ40 through the FJ80, so 1960 through 1997 (38 years). From 1998 through 2021 they imported the UZJ100 and J 200 which were V8s...so that's 33 years.

I don't believe they ever imported a gas 4 cylinder Land Cruiser to the US (there were some 4 cylinders diesels imported, but they were few and far between). I know they built a ton of 70 series with gas 4 cylinders (the 22 R in particular), but none of them were ever imported to the US.

Ford ecoboost v6s have been run hundreds of thousands of miles without trouble.

Ehhh.. let’s not get carried away here. They have plenty of troubles. There is a recall on newer ones now for valves separating and falling into the combustion chamber basically immediately turning those engines into scrap.

And they have been building these engines for over a decade and using these valves since the first Ford that came off the line. Plenty of time to work these things out.

The '25 is the reason I bought my '23.

EPA has banned V8's, so all vehicles will be turbos from now on. It's not Toyota being dense - they have no choice.

They could have build them a bit better. Some of the things going wrong on the Tundra have nothing to do with the motor being turbocharged.

You don’t hear about as many issues with the new Honda turbo motors. Or the new 2.7 Turbomax from GM. The Fords had some teething issues but are a bit better now.

If you get a new car every 4 years a turbo is fine I question a turbocharged engine giving you 10 years and 150000 miles without significant issues

I have a 2011 Ford F150 4x4 Ecoboost with 251k miles.
One transmission issue @ 155k that cost $1000.
No other issues with the engine.
Plenty of power when I need it for pulling or speed.

There are four distinct, completely different engines that carry the Ecoboost label from Ford:

3.5 V6 used in upper level F150s and certain other apps - this is the one that had cam phaser issues in certain years. Possibly one of the highest production volume engines in modern history with many millions sold; with those numbers, there are going to be some bad batches even with Six Sigma quality due to the multiplying effect of part count. There are three distinct generations of it, Gen II is the one with cam phaser issues. Gen 1 to Gen II was a total redesign. Gen III is a significant, but more evolutionary redesign of Gen II.

3.0 V6 - RWD Ford Explorer ST, not many made to date. I don't recall whether this is a variant of one of the others.

2.7 V6 "Nano" - Also used in the base and lower level F150, Edge Sport, newest Ranger, etc. This is the one with the bad batch of valves, but until this batch was considered to be one of the most reliable, durable modern engines in production by any OEM.

2.0/2.3 I4 - Mustang, Edge, Fusion, Focus ST and others, has kind of a checkered history. There are some very fast Mustangs and Focus'es with them, but they can be temperamental.

There are also some smaller I3 and I4 engines that Ford labels Ecoboost.

All that to say, you can't make a blanket statement that "Ecoboost's are reliable" or "Ecoboost's suck" without being more specific. There are hundreds of thousands of high mileage, thoroughly abused 2.7's and 3.5's out there.
