Hearing rumors that they are escorting workers out today, of course they cant get rid of everybody today because it takes time to shut it down...but looking like end of the year aint really the case

Honestly though, Shell in general is closing up shop. They came out this summer and said that they were going to start moving more to renewables. The been taking people to the wood shed at the old square for a while now.

Is it just low oil prices that did them in?
Gas and diesel demand has made a comeback but jet fuel demand is still WAY down. I’m not sure how Shell Convent is structured but some of the smaller stand alone refineries that aren’t integrated with a chemical plant rely on jet sales for a big chunk of their profit.

I know him. Good man. Hear he has more time for fishing now than ever before.

Just remember this when you hear we need to screw these plants over with Property Taxes. People act like they can never shut down or move.

Yeah generally. But when fuel oil demand has been crushed it’s hard to send it out the door.
I haven’t looked at the data, but just pull 2019 Vs 2020 jet fuel consumption. That ought to give you a glimpse of issues the refinery industry is having right now.

Somehow it'll be Jindal's fault.

Must be the reason Valero Norco is building a Chem plant as fast as they can.

CONVENT - Shell announced it plans to shutter its Convent refinery in the coming weeks after it failed to find a buyer for the facility.
According to a statement from the company Thursday, the location will begin the process of shutting down in mid-November. Shell had been looking for a buyer to take to the site since July but has been unsuccessful.
Shell said the decision to close the refinery is "part of the company’s global strategy to invest in a core set of uniquely integrated manufacturing sites that are also strategically positioned for the transition to a low-carbon future."
The refinery has about 700 employees.

It seems that things have mostly been stable in the Nola office over the past few years. So far Shell has indicated in the press that the Gulf of Mexico operations is key to their future to make money to help fund their "clean energy" ideas.
Who knows though. They could just shut Nola down and move jobs to Houston.

This really sucks. 700 people unemployed right before the holidays.
