We are going douring Mardi Gras. It will be my son's first trip, age 5. We are doing 1 table service meal a day because my wife wants to do character meals for him so I am biting the bullet for that. Otherwise we would either do no meal plan or quick service only.

One table service per day is all you need. And there are excellent counter service options if you do a little research.
The character meals are usually all you can eat buffet or family style platters. The food is good enough.
Pictures of the kids' faces lighting up as the characters draw near are priceless. Great vacation with young kids.
It's my belief that you spend less money without a meal plan and get what you want.

Problem I had is the ones you wait in line for spend ten times longer with kid and its free. I paid 75 bucks for a buffet for 2. Characters came by for like a minute each and the photo guy wasnt even there. I had to take crap photos with no room. You also have to wait for them to come by. Breakfast buffet took like 90 minutes.

Its crowded all the time. Just go when its best for you. Do the fast pass planning and have a basic itenerary and you will be fine.

Disney is packed all year now. There is no escaping the crowds. I just got back from a trip to Disney and Universal last week. It has been one of the slowest weeks at Disney for years. They had record crowds at Epcot for the food and wine festival and magic kingdom had a very good size crowd for this time of year. Universal is just nuts this time of year anyway with Halloween haunted nights. It was as miserable as peak summer this time.

We are planning on bringing our kids during Mardi Gras also. Which agent service does everyone use or do you book on your own? Any other tips or advice? Kids are 4 and 9.

I have a TA do all my planning for me and here's the thing... It's FREE. Disney pays her commission. This is the second time I've used her and she's awesome. If you want her contact info I would be more than willing to share it.

You should of started booking months ago to get your fastpasses and dining reservations.

And is it worth booking the character breakfast before park opening? I was told its good way to be the first in line for a Tier 1 ride and getting a jump on the crowds.

Yes. And great pics with a deserted Main Street.
But unless y'all eat fast, you'll lose the advantage. Don't rush the character meal as you paid plenty for it.
The Land pavilion in EPCOT has good counter service choices.

The cheapest way is to buy your tickets from Undercover Tourist $1267 (3 for age 10+ & 1 child) & get a non-Disney hotel for $69/night $390 that has park shuttle service and drive to Orlando $225.
$125/ day minimum budget for 6 days.
Pack food for breakfast & snack in the room $200.
So that's roughly $2600 for a cheap trip.

I have 8:10 at Be Our guest with Beauty and the beast. Figure that gives us plenty time. How early will they let you in for your reservation? Because deserted Main sounds awesome.
Another question...I'm going the week before Mardi Gras and think that will help with the waiting. Any suggestions on where to eat at night at Disney that would link up with the parades?
