It’s funny that American is being so gaslit, that this is completely apparent in the micro sense but on the grand scale the ENTIRE culture is designed to deceive us by telling us these same arguments are brilliant when made by professional Leftists.

Agreed. Ignoring them is how we got to this point.

It's always seemed to me that a majority of posters on the OT rely mostly on the pathos (emotional) or sometimes ethos (personal appeal) types of decision making over the logos (logical) type.

Easy response.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

My SIL (no pics) got very anxious and stressed when we were all talking and the subject came up that myself nor my wife were vaxed, and were not planning on getting it.

Meh, lots of right wingers act like this as well.

That's always pretty much been my mantra. I rarely discuss politics or religion with anyone.

It is a fact their minds are set in stone as to their beliefs, and if they vary from mine, I won't change their opinion, and they surely won't change mine.

Some things are better off unsaid.

To the OP: It sucks that your brother goes into personal attack mode by someone who I would assume is an adult----at least of adult age.

That alone shows a level of immaturity that becomes another thing I can't tolerate in someone who claims to be an adult.

It helps that we have, ya know, logic to form our arguments. You knew that, though.

100% my thoughts. I’ll always think Obama sucked and they’ll always think Trump is a monster.

Have a good day, sir!

It’s not 95%. That’s just what Twitter wants you to believe.

I’m not on Twitter.

Do you honestly believe over 5% of the population understands the difference between factual statements and arguments? And from there, can evaluate an argument down to its component parts: that the factual statements are true, that the argument is valid, and to therefore conclude that the entire argument is sound?

And I don’t mean that they know those terms. I mean that I don’t believe over 5% of the population even so much as approaches that kind of critical analysis before forming an argument, or before responding to one.

Everybody thinks the other guy is arguing from emotion and they're the logical one. In reality practically everybody is just parroting knee jerk talking points.

This is what I've found, too. The people who just started following politics in the last 10-15 years are the absolute fricking worst. They have no understanding of the establishments of government, the figures who shaped it, the importance and history of compromise, absolutely no appreciation for history. It's just a bunch of empty talking points they heard from some unqualified talking head on TV, the radio, or social media. They look at politics and government the same way they look at sports...rah-rah-rah for my team, frick your team.

My family and I lean left. My in-laws don't. We avoid politics when visiting. Except for one guy, my wife's uncle who, like myself, has long followed and loved politics. He and I stayed up until 2:30am drinking beers and talking politics. No voices were raised, points were conceded, history was discussed...extremely civil conversation and we both came away respecting the other more and, echoing your sentiment, we both wish the loudmouth know-nothings would all just shut the frick up so we can get this country back on track.

I'm a Poli Sci major who used to love following politics. I can't stand it anymore. To build off of what you said, no one will concede anything, even when their position is clearly in the wrong. Both sides believe the other is fundamentally dishonest, and as such, it's not only acceptable but laudable never to give an inch, even if it requires dishonesty in doing so. Because that's what you have to do in a "war". It's fricking insanity.

Sounds like you just surround yourself with idiots. For me, I'm confident in saying maybe 5% of the people I know DON'T understand the difference between the two.

Had to relearn the lesson with my older brother who is a massive leftist and attempts to steer the majority of conversations we have as a family into a political debate. He'll get his arse kicked in said debate and then start throwing a fit and behaving like a child hurling personal insults and then the night is ruined.

Remember, OT, as a rule, it's best to not engage in these types of conversation with them.

Come on. Let's hear some details.

I have no doubt that you and all of your friends are very smart, as well as pretty and witty and gay (not like that, though not that there's anything wrong with that if it were like that, hypothetically speaking).
