Great. Going to a concert tomorrow night and just received an email blast from Ticketmaster that they will be collecting for Red Cross during the concert. Not really looking forward to the artists bringing this up and blathering on between every song. Just play damn music.

Don't they take a cut then pass along to other charities who take a cut then pass along to final place?
Kinda reminds me of back in my college days as a middle man between "buyers and sellers". I had a decent source and several guys I knew didn't. Taking a pinch off each bag kept me supplied for free.

That is a cynical, at best, and blatantly dishonest, at worst, way of describing their operating model.

Salvation Army, always a solid group to donate too

Does the Red Cross do anything other than maintaining the shelters? Like gutting homes?

In 2014, Red Cross claimed that $.91 out of every dollar went to the people. However, NPR did some investigating and estimated it to be $.70 or lower.

In this case, the problem with the number stems from its own tax documents. In recent years, fundraising expenses have been as high as 26 percent compared with what people donated. That doesn't even include management and overhead. Instead of 91 percent of people's money going to services, the real number could be in the 70s, or lower.
There's no way to know precisely because the Red Cross officials would not say what the new number is and would not provide a breakdown of the charity's expenses.
"They're not going to look as good if they do," says Daniel Borochoff, president of Charity Watch, "so they don't have that much incentive to do it."

No, thats the problem. They dont stick around. They dont help with the tear out or cleanup. If they decide to do a longer project they take their admin cut and pass it to local groups who then take their admin cuts and then the people that need help get it. The red cross is an inefficient big bureaucracy.
It is better and more efficient to donate to local community or state charities that are in it for the long haul.
Churches are also a good choice.
In Austin we have Austin Diaster Network. I know when I donate to them the money gets split to local groups who I know will be hands on for the long term in the affected areas.
I dont know the names but I'm sure Houston has great local charities to give to.

United Way operates on a completely different organizational model than the Red Cross.
First and foremost, United Way doesn't try to "do" anything, even though I know that sounds weird and counter-intuitive.
United Way has local branches all over the country. Each branch is essentially operated as an independent entity with it's own CEO. The purpose of each branch is to work with local leadership and figure out what the biggest areas of need in the community are. Then it figures out which local NPOs in the area are best serving those needs, and partners with them.
As tends to be the case with local non-profits, many of them do fantastic work because they are so close to the community, but they don't have the luxury of big marketing and fundraising budgets. United Way leverages its brand to help generate donations and then distribute them to their partner agencies.
In other words, United Way helps these local non-profits utilize their budgets for the actual services they provide instead of having to worry about where next year's operating budget is going to come from.
Yes, there are overhead costs involved, but UW takes great lengths to minimize them. For example, they rely heavily on volunteer labor so they can minimize salary expenses. The branch I worked with had a staff of 4 full-time people in a community of 150,000+
As a result, I believe $.91 of every dollar goes directly to the local partner organizations. Which is pretty damn good.

Red Cross CEO on CBS this morning...claimed 91% of ALL donations go to specific disaster/causes. Not one of the THREE "hosts" challenged her on that figure, nor did they inquire about her compensation {rumored to be 700k+}. The CEO was not able to answer the question about how much $ had been donated for the Harvey disaster...said something about it taking a couple of weeks to figure all that out !
