We just ignoring that the vast majority of that 139K population is located in municipalities that have their own city police departments separate from TPSO?

Is it really the vast majority? Hammond’s official population inside the city limits is just above 21,000, Amite City is just above 4,000, Kentwood is just above 2,000, Independence is below 2,000, and Roseland is below 1,000. Some villages as well, but I can’t see them having enough population to push incorporated populations above 50% of 139k or whatever the current parish population is.

Could it be similar to BR where people just assume some of the places right next to them are inside the city limits of some of the cities in the parish when in reality they are actually unincorporated like StG used to be.

Also, at most I think to incorporate these incorporated municipalities only need a police chief while still being able to use the Sheriff’s Department for additional needs. They can have more, and Hammond does have additional officers and staff besides the chief (Southeastern has its own police as well). I am not sure about the others or the number of officers required to handle all calls for each city. It just seems like unless they are all well staffed that they rely on the sheriff more than a fully funded city police department does.

Nine should be enough if you'd keep the repeat criminals in jail or send them to Angola.

HPD probably has 60-70 patrol officers along with detectives divisions for adult, juvenile and narcotics. Hammond also has its in jail which it staffs with 15-18 jailers total.

Part of the problem with many of these departments is they are bloated at the top with people that have worked for 20+ years making over $100K per year. I bet the SO has 20-25 administrators making $85k per year or more.

Every tax proposal in the BR area failed yesterday. The BR tax, Zachary school board tax failed as well. People are tired of hearing the gov needs more money. We all make sacrifices within our budgets. We expect government to do the same.

The numbers earning $100k/yr in overtime is the problem.

So they needed an extra 25 million just for 9 deputies?

I got lost when someone wrote

Clothes do wear out but there isn’t an agency I know of that replaces every piece of uniform every year. He changed the uniform and had to replace everyone’s uniform. That’s a huge expense for an agency the size of TPSO.

…Is Hugo Boss personally outfitting 9 people?

To be fair it’s 9 per shift. 4 shifts is 36 total. But I understand your point. I agree with the Sheriff pay is too low but all the other shite he has spent money in along with bloated salaries at the top could have gone to the shift guys.

Here is what happened with the iniforms as I understand it. New Sheriff comes in and wants to change the color of the uniform. They go out and purchase 4 new uniforms for all uniform patrol, jailers etc. well over 100 people. So that’s 400+ uniforms. Agencies purchase new uniforms every year but they don’t fully outfit everyone every year. Maybe have budget for 20%. He could have kept exiting colors and saved a ton of money.

But in what world are we pretending that “preventing and investigating crime” isn’t protecting the public? Your “individuals” disclaimer meaning specific protection detail isn’t what people are talking about. But preventing crime does protect the communities at large.

I have no argument with your assessment. I was merely speaking that individuals are not required to be protected at all times by police. Because police patrol your area, you are not protected from harm. It may make you feel good that police are patrolling but realistically they are not actually protecting you.

People need to be able to protect themselves first, until the police arrive and do the paperwork.

I am not being critical of law enforcement, just being realistic.
As far as the Tangi Sheriff situation, I have no dog in that hunt.

Well you would think if Edwards had a $3mil surplus he would’ve purchased sidearms and ballistic vests for the deputies, but he didn’t.

That just happened with the new sheriff.

I’m glad the tax failed but let’s not act like Edwards left TPSO in a great situation.

Every Parish does this. Not only do they Uniforms, they also repaint cars often with a different color schemes. Its a huge wste of money. Can someone explain why the change is warranted.

Daniel Edwards left him with a 3 million dollar surplus. He ran though it in almost 18 months. Changed uniforms, started a new motorcycle division which he bought 5-6 Harley’s for. Spending $400K on software replacement. Tangi deserves better than Sheriff spend a lot.

I voted for Sticker, but he’s really been style over substance to this point. The first six months after he took over, there were Sheriff’s units EVERYWHERE around here. An attempt at showing the citizenry that hey, law and order is back. Nah. After that titty baby comment last night, I would guess that he’s lost most of his support. My Facebook feed was absolutely bashing him.

Cops don't need more money for personnel. They can use all of their cameras and ALPRs to solve crimes.

Agree 100%, but don’t tell that to their egos.

Unless he updated their uniforms, which a lot of agencies are doing now, it’s stupid.

A lot of sheriffs are retired LSP, getting a pension and a salary.
