A jury handed a $2.055 billion verdict in favor of a couple in California who say their cancer was caused by long-term exposure to Monsanto's popular weed killer Roundup, according to the plaintiffs' attorneys.

The verdict in Oakland includes more than $55 million in compensatory damages to the couple and $2 billion in punitive damages, a statement said.

Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, insists that glyphosate -- the key ingredient in Roundup -- is safe.

"Bayer is disappointed with the jury's decision and will appeal the verdict in this case," it said in a statementfollowing Monday's verdict.

The septuagenarian plaintiffs, Alva and Alberta Pilliod of Livermore, used the weed killer on their property for more than three decades and were diagnosed with the same type of cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, four years apart, according to their attorneys.

Juries are almost always going to stick it to the big businesses. It's no skin off their back.

Supposedly Bayer AG just bought Monsanto last year knowing full well these lawsuits were out there.

Seems they chose poorly.

Don't fret....it will not hold up on appeal. It will be reduced.

Actually, that depends on where you are and how well the plaintiff's attorney does.......it could very much go the other way.

Some places are VERY conservative.

Louisiana only has punitive damages allowed in very limited circumstances.

You should post what Monsanto did to get the $2B in punitive.

As long as the profit margins are UP, does it matter?

So has the EPA and every peer reviewed reputable study on the chemical but because people on the jury read an article that their aunt posted on Facebook they get to make decisions like this

What’s worse is that the one organization that says it might cause cancer: expressly excludes this couple as being at risk.

They made a point to say that if there is a correlation, it’s with daily occupational exposure. Not residential frequency and concentrations.

Lawsuits are for trashy people
