I find it humorous that these settlements far outweigh whatever they would have been worth by orders of magnitude.

It's almost like the most financially responsible thing they can do for their families is to get shot by cops.

Seems like it would be the most financially responsible thing for the cops to not shoot people without just cause.

Well sure...

But...and i'm just spitballing here, if I were in a bad situation and you told me I could make sure my kids would be financially taken care of for life...and all I had to do was get paralyzed...

Man, I'd have to think HARD about it.

After lawyers, medical care, and taxes, a lot of that money is going to disappear.

I imagine Dontrell's family is sitting in a financial advisor's office right now so they can formulate a plan to deal with this money in a proper manner.
I imagine you being somewhat racist.

Am I missing something? Did this guy have a criminal record that just wasn't mentioned in the article?

No taxes on pain and suffering, and the medical lien is probably negotiated through Medicaid so that won't be too much even for a paralysis case. But the lawyers are going to have to appeal and take it to the legislature to get approval. That is what is going to take away from the plaintiff's recovery.
