I saw some Skynyrd documentary once that talked about them getting started and opening for the Stones. They had a giant Stones Lips logo out on this runway that went out in front of the rest of the stage. Mick was adamant that no one except for him could go out there. Someone told Ronnie and he was like OK. He got drunk before they went on, started the set, walked out to the logo, planted his mic stand and stood and did their entire set from there.
I always thought that was a great story.

Was lucky enough (and old enough) to have seen the original Skynard in 1976.

Lynyrd Skynyrd during that time was probably the best live band in music. Knebworth, a year earlier, when they walked out on the tongue and proceeded to absolutely blow the Stones off the stage is one of the biggest moments in rock history. The quality of their live performances is owed almost entirely to RVZ for being pretty much a slave driver when it came to rehearsal. There wasn't a band our group in the world during that time that wanted to follow them up.

It wasn't just a story, that's how it happened. For Freebird he brought the entire band out on the runway.
Knebworth, 1976 (YouTube)
Seeing Brits waving Confederate flags, particularly in 2021, is a bit surreal.

That's so fricking cool. I didn't know it was such a big moment. I just heard and saw it in that documentary I watched a few years back. I wish I could remember the name of it because it was really good.

those west coast women buy tickets and cheer in front of the stars & bars at that.
Sadly, the Mount Rushmore decoration on with side of the stage would cause a protest today, too. In Oakland, it would be the equivalent of the flag.

When men were men and women wore no bras. Great times, glad I was 20. Suppose to see em in, but they crashed.

A great great tune…….
And the scourge of thousands of musicians who've had to endure drunk and stoned screams of fans requesting it, warranted or not.

It was a good year to turn 16.

Of course none of that holds a candle to what is happening today. I think the 80's were better in general, but not musically.
The music in the first half of the 80s was great. The last few years of the 80s, music in most genres was pretty terrible.

Skynyrd’s 1977 performance of Freebird in Oakland was, in my opinion, the single greatest musical performance in the history of mankind.

Same here. But I have to admit it makes me sad to see and remember how we were as a country, free, patriotic with a love and appreciation for who and what we are as a country. No way such a festival could happen today, especially in Oakland, without riots and violence from those who hate everything about our country. Watch the video again. Look at all the symbols of our country you see, our Founding Fathers, Old Glory waving proudly, even the Confederate flag. All of those now are widely hated and labeled as “racist”. We once were a great country, the greatest in history. Now half the country is trying to tear it all down.

All those people, in spite of being hippies, look happy and not offended. Wtf happened to such people?
