Anyone know the impact of closing/opening the gate near the old Gator Bar? I recall AP and IP being involved in a suit with the owners over it. Don’t know if it impacted flooding or drainage.

The gates are supposed to be used to allow Spanish Lakes basin to flow into Bayou Manchac when the bayou drops and we need to drain the basin. I would assume they are closed, but you never know with Ourso. AP is currently pumping water back in Bayou Manchac. Pumps and sand bagging that road have been used for decades to keep water from over topping the road. Long before aqua dams existed. There still is room in the bayou for more water towards the Mississippi River. It just needs to be encouraged that way instead of over the road.

The areas that Iberville is trying to protect aren't in Spanish Lake. They're homes and industrial facilities that are 2-4 miles away from Spanish Lake.

So why not put the dam down way down there and let floodwaters flow into the swamp instead of people's living rooms?

Thanks. Seems like the lake should be lowered on a regular basis to allow it to hold more water during large rain events.

What we really need right now is some pictures to see if it's doing anything.

According to the lawsuit, the lowest elevation of the road is about 13.2 feet. According to the USGS gauge there, the water level is currently 14.25 feet so if the dams are up, they are diverting water. They add 2.5 feet of elevation to get up to 15.7 feet.

Whether you agree or disagree with Mitch Ourso's actions here, it seem Morvant is overstepping his authority. Morvant is a judge in the 19th JDC, Iberville Parish is in the 18th JDC. As long as Iberville is installing those aqua-dams on their side of the parish line it seems Morvant has no say authority to order Ourso to do anything.

Ourso sued EBR in 18th for right to keep dams up and get damages from EBR for cost to install. 1st circuit moved venue to EBR since suing EBR. EBR countered for TRO in now moved suit as it involved the same issue - aqua dams. Backfire.

And FWIW, Bayou Manchac is also probably full of a decades worth of accumulated obstructions, logs, trees, garbage, and sedimentation.

Sounds like they followed the Blueprints the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board laid out. Forward thinking

I'm surprised nobody has sabotaged that dam yet.

y this logic, Baton Rouge should dam up the Amite River and just flood St. Helena and East Feliciana. They don't because it's an asinine thing to do.

They are trying to do that with the Darlington Dam...

Why doesn't BR Mayor Broome call up her comrade NO Mayor Cantrell for help with forming a EBR Sewage and Water Board? What's going to happen when the city if St George decides they don't want BR flood waters drowning them out either.

The Ms River is very nearby, why hasn't EBR parish police jury and BR as a city installed and developed pumping stations to pump flood waters towards and into the MS River.

Why should the parish of Iberville be the floodplain for EBR's negligence? Elections have consequences. And BR wanted Broome. You reap what you sow.

It would be unfortunate for the FBI, Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana State Police to be notified about a TD poster threatening to vandalize or destruct a critical infrastructure flood element....

What’s the back story here? What has change this century to make Iberville more susceptible to flooding that has come from the north for eons?

It took until Page 9 for someone to point out the obvious and something that was stated in the Advocate article.

Morvant has no authority over a damn thing in Iberville Parish. Why a long time judge thought he had any legal authority in IP is bizarre. If EBR was looking for action they went to the wrong judicial district. Ourso is spot on to tell that judge to pound sand. The fact that EBR sprung this on him while he was meeting with Broome, JBE and Ascensions President was insanely stupid. He reacted accordingly and he had every right to do so

Years ago some politicians decided that no water was better than low water, now the actual lake is no longer navigable with the number of trees that were allowed to take over. Said politicians still claim the overgrowth is better than an open lake holding water.
