One explorer reported well maintained lanes and manicured lawns. Barely a hundred years later when the next explorer came thru it was all in ruin and overgrown. What happened?

Anyone in the Pearlington Ms. area with a boat, and wants to check out the 1500 ft mound there, let me know.

The civilizations were already on the decline. Many fell off quickly. A 100 years can be a long time. They were largely peaceful for generations, but there are accounts of settlements looking completely different on subsequent contacts just a few decades after they were originally encountered. Once sprawling communities were replaced with more compact settlements with defensive structures in place. War and conflict sent many into upheaval.

Climate change is another. A warm period immediately preceded this era. Many consider the warmer weather with ushering Europe out of the Dark Ages. Europeans were no longer on the verge of starvation because crops became more abundant and diverse. This era was followed by the Little Ice Age. There are theories that crop shortages led to more conflict and disease among these Native settlements because of colder weather.

These stressed and declining civilizations were probably impacted by diseases such as small pox they contracted from Europeans when they first made contact.

All these factors meant once healthy civilizations were essentially wiped out between the time they were first discovered, and when subsequent encounters occurred.

Cool bro.
I never found anything except some old bones I thought that were from cows and some crappy dinnerware.

My great grandmother raised a family of Brown’s on Mound Street. Bank parking lot is where the house was.

I have a confederate general and his family buried on my place on 124 just past the cotton gin.

When I was a kid visiting Jonesville was a great little town with plenty of commerce. All of the buildings on Mound and Front Street were bustling. It’s a shame those little towns are just dying on the vine.

Booger Tristler still around?

If I was anywhere near you I would take you up on that in a heartbeat. Its crazy the amount of artifacts still out there. I've found thousands just washing around in the waves of reservoirs.

The program I saw claimed it was due to the fact that they had no effective means of communicating over long distances. So once the tribes domain got really large, the central governing body could not longer communicate with the ones living farther from the center. So the ones on the outskirts started doing their own thing. Possibly even turning against the larger group. So it just fell apart.

I'm no historian, so I'm probably screwing this up. But essentially they were probably as advanced as their neighbors to the south. But the materials they used to build were not as long lasting as the Incas, Aztecs, and Mayans. So there was no evidence of the grandeur left to see other than the dirt mounds.

So in other words they are opening a new landfill and marketing it as a Native American mound?

Emerald Mound is the second largest mound in the US btw.

I've read about huge palaces obviously they would be made of wood in this area. What about doors and door hinges. It just makes you wonder.

My mother grew up there and they were lifelong friends. All her family is buried on the hill in Harrisonburg. I love it there just don’t get there often. I reckon Roy Schneider is having a miller light about now.

Only if its a Pony!

If she was friends with Booger she knew my family too I'm sure. My Grandaddy and Mr. Boog were close close friends.
