Can you imagine if we put all the energy and emotion and media attention we’ve spent on 150 year old statues into actually addressing a single issue plaguing the inner city communities in our country?

Yes. He funded the beginning of the public school system in New Orleans and Baltimore.

As I recall, he was pretty progressive for his time. Sold land to free people of color, etc. May have even freed slaves. Can't remember on that one.

McDonogh was a white slave owner who profited from Black people who were forced to work for their freedom over a period of 15 years. He developed a program where slaves he owned could buy their own freedom, generally over the course of 15 years while he took in money from their forced labor before they were able to earn their freedom.

McDonogh left the bulk of his fortune to the cities of Baltimore and New Orleans to build public schools for poor children: white and freed Black children. More than 30 public schools were built in New Orleans because of his donation.

According to the WPA and state library of Louisiana, the statue outside of Gallier Hall was erected in 1898 on McDonogh's birthday, after $7,000 was raised by a local committee. Many of the funds were raised from 5-cent donations from students.

New Orleans public school students would hold a procession to the statue each year on McDonogh Day, the first Friday in May.

He also supported the American Colonization Society which transported people of color to Liberia.

The statue is next to probably the most important federal building in the city, In light of terrorist and the threat of terrorist attacks on federal buildings over the last twenty five years, one would think the response time to anything unlawful on that square would be stopped in minutes.

The Federal security apparatus and the city of New Orleans have a lot of explaining to do.

People who pride themselves on destroying statues and history and claiming the moral high ground while violently silencing any critics:

Nazis
Communists
Bolsheviks
Taliban

They just watch for white guys when it comes to terrorist attacks on federal installations.

Customs House might be more important, but probably splitting hairs.

So, indentured servitude?
There were all sorts of folks who came to this country via indentured servitude.

So they became indentured servants. Were any other people ever indentured?

They missed their best opportunity for reforming the police. Instead we have idiots rioting and others pushing for completely getting rid of them.

In his will he also freed his slaves as well as bequeathed money to set many of them up in business.
