Spotify revealed the most popular podcasts on its platform for 2021 — with controversial talk show “The Joe Rogan Experience” taking the No. 1 slot globally. Rogan, who has been accused by critics of spreading misinformation on COVID and providing a microphone for far-right figures, signed an exclusive deal with Spotify last year. Rounding out the Top 5 on Spotify’s global podcast ranking are are Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” (also exclusive to Spotify) in second place, followed by Audiochuck’s “Crime Junkie” (#3), “TED Talks Daily” (#4), and The New York Times’ “The Daily” (#5). The audio streaming giant released the podcast rankings as part of the annual Spotify Wrapped event, highlighting the top trends on the platform and giving users their own personalized look-back on what they listened to in 2021.

i saw a bunch of tweets in the vein of "this is how you know america is fricked"

it's funny how these people take joe 10000x more seriously than he takes himself

eta: also i've literally never heard of any of these other than dark history

People love true crime shite.

I've lost whole weekends to Investigation Discovery channel.

I kind of completely stopped watching those shows and pretty much any crime procedural.

I feel like that stuff has a negative effect on me.

I'm probably hypocritical because I am into organized (and no so organized) crime stuff, but the true crime stuff is creepy to me. who wants to hear about a husband cutting up his wife? i really don't get it

She’s changing up show to a woman empowerment bs format. Show went down when she dropped Sofia and she left Barstool. She took the bag and ran.

Who has he had on in the last year that is "far-right"?

It's a rhetorical question and the answer is nobody. Today, anybody that's not far-left is considered far-right.

Always sunny podcast should be gaining some ground. What is dark history? Might have to check it out. Surprised carolla has fallen off the top 10 but I don't think he is spotify exclusive

Not too surprising. Finally move one of the most popular podcasts to one of the most popular streaming services after a decade+ and people are gonna flock to it
