Japan’s public broadcaster has revealed that one of its reporters died from overwork.

NHK said that labor officials had concluded that the 31-year-old political reporter died from heart failure caused by spending long hours on the job.

Japan, known for its ‘salaryman’ culture and punishing work hours, has struggled for years to tackle the impact of overwork on employees’ health. A government study published last year found that one in five workers is at risk of working themselves to death.

Excessive hours are such a big problem that there’s even a Japanese word for death by overwork: karoshi.

This should be a warning to the North Baton Rouge economic development district of what could happen should businesses invest in the area....

How many a-hole bosses are using this story saying "why can't you be more like that guy?!?"

That's only working 15 hour days for the normal 21 days a month that people work. We got boys here that do that regularly...maybe it's because she was a woman.

Piker. You’re supposed to stop when you see dead relatives beckoning to you.

What am I missing? That's 7 12's, for a month? I have done that plenty of times on large construction projects.

The article says another lady died from 109 hours of overtime one month, but her death was a suicide. I don't if the 159 lady was also a suicide but to say they died from overwork is a bit slanted, though no less sad.

159 hours of overtime over a month period. So basically 80 hour work weeks.

So it's about 120 hours per week for 2 weeks, right?

I did almost exactly that once before...but I was also getting paid to play video games, so there's probably a slight difference.

If this was 159 hours in a month then I would have to agree with you that is not as bad as it sounds.

When my dad was in the Gulf 7/7 , I am sure he logged easily over 100 hours plus.
